Introduction
Even though Crusoes father wanted him to become a lawman, he decided to follow his own dream and travel the world with a ship. But his adventurers dont actually start there, but when he ends up on an unknown island after the ship crashes and he is the only survivor. Soon he gets challenged from different aspects, but the most challenging thing was getting himself food.
In the beginning, it was very hard for him, but as he got used to the life and the surroundings, he was able to find goats, grapes, melons, and even learned how to farm corn, barley, and much more.
I love the way he got the hang of his life and I decided to recreate his dishes as much as I could and create a few new ones using the basic ingredients he had. This was my challenge, and now that I managed to do so I decided to share the recipes with all of you.
In Robinson Crusoe Cookbook : Appetizing and Simple Recipes for Every Adventurer you will learn how to cook many recipes. The best part is that even if you are not into cooking you will find them easily.
My favorite recipes are goat butter and cheese, which I thought they would be most difficult to make, but it turned out super easy and delicious. Now, I make them regularly.
So, its time to become an explorer and adventurer yourself.
Chapter 1 Lets have the essentials first
Goat butter
Even if we have some basic ingredients and eat them as they are, having butter to cook them on or just spread on some bread is like a miracle. Especially in the case of Robinson Crusoe. Even though he never knew how to milk a goat or seen how butter is made, he did it well, and I think you can do it too by using this simple recipe as a guide.
Prep: 30min Cook: / Total Time: 1h / Servings: 2 cups
Ingredients:
Directions:
In a mixer, pour the milk cream.
Now ,turn on the mixer and mix for 10 to 15 minutes.
(The milk cream will look like whipped, but later it will separate into little butter balls, this I the time when the butter gets divided from the goats milk)
Once you get the butter balls, take them and place them in the ice water.
Squeeze out the buttermilk from the butter so it becomes a nice and hardball.
Transfer the butter into another clean bowl and if you want you can add salt.
Note: Dont discard away the buttermilk, its great for many other recipes, like the cornbread you will learn how to make in this book.
Basic rice
I dont know about you, but whenever I cook rice and it comes out amazing I am happy. Before I got into cooking rice was the most difficult to cook. Usually, I ended up with hard or gummy rice. Well without the right guidance it can be easily ruined. But now, I have the simplest and the best rice recipe.
Prep: 10min / Cook: 20min / Total Time: 30min / Servings: 4
Ingredients:
Directions:
Turn on medium heat and place a medium saucepan. Add the water and once boiling add the butter, rice, and salt to taste.
Once it starts to simmer lower the heat. Cover the saucepan and let it cook for 18 minutes, or until the water gets absorbed and the rice is tender.
Remove from heat. Let it sit for 5 minutes (covered). You can fluff it up with a fork and then serve.
Corn Bread
Crusoe managed to farm a lot of corn, which means great cornbread, and you will need a good recipe to enjoy it as he did.
Prep: 10min / Cook: 20min / Total Time: 30min / Servings: 8-12
Ingredients:
Directions:
Preheat your oven to 425F.
In a bowl, combine the eggs, cornmeal, buttermilk, baking powder, and baking soda.
Mix it with a whisk or spoon.
If you are using bacon grease, heat it up in a skillet before adding. Stir as you pour, not to cook the eggs.
Pour the batter into a skillet and place it in the oven.
Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until browned on the sides.
You might need to run a knife or spatula around the bread so that you can remove it easily from the skillet.
Serve and enjoy!
Note: use the same skillet that you heated the bacon. If you are not using bacon, coat a skillet with butter.
Homemade cheese
One of the fruits that Robinson Crusoe had at hand was lemons, and that is what youll need to make homemade goat cheese.
