For many years, I thought pincushions had to be tomatoes. Only tomatoes and only red. Maybe with a little strawberry attached. I was young, so I figured there was a law of some kind.

Then a trip to a fabric store named Cloth World rocked my world. Banana pincushions? There were also peaches and plums, and what might have been an apple, but it didnt matter. They were just tomatoes in a different color. But that bananait was bright yellow, faux velvet, and different. I bought it and had it for many years.

Still, it wasnt until I discovered Doreen Speckmanns Norwegian Chicken pattern that the idea of making pincushions took root. I made a few and I was hooked. They were cute, made with 4" Log Cabin blocks. I began using other blocks, making bigger blocks, adding embellishments, and so on. I shared my hastily written instructions with friends and in classes, and after several requests, my pattern Pollo Loco was published in 2005.

Then I was asked to create a pincushion for the Buggy Barns Year of the Pincushion Club, and the Watermelon was born. A pieced Strawberry joined that, and Fruit Salad was published in 2009. There were also pincushions made with charm squares: the Tuffets pattern in 2008 and Sweet Liberty Tuffets in 2009.

Fast-forward to July 2016 and Amanda Jean Nyberg of Crazy Mom Quilts. She challenged herself to make a pincushion a dayand she did, posting each pincushion on Instagram. I made a few, just enough to know that I was going to be ready if Amanda repeated her challenge. I was so excited when she announced that she was!

In July 2017, I made 49 pincushions in 31 days. It was without question one of the most enjoyable, entertaining, educational, and rewarding creative challenges Ive ever done. Some days I had a plan, and other days I didnt have any idea what to makeI just started cutting and sewing, hoping an idea would come to me along the way. Many of this books pincushions were made during that month, and I added a few that I didnt quite get around to making.
