Theres just something about Christmas cookies that makes the holiday season feel especially magical. After all, they star in so many of our Christmas rituals throughout the month of December as we count down to the twenty-fifth.

First, theres the baking. Whether you like to bake on your own or with family and friends, just put on some holiday music, gather your ingredientsflour, sugar, sprinkles, and alland let the merriment begin!

Growing up, my mom and I usually planned one day in December to make all of our cookies. Wed pick five or so recipesmany of which have since been veganized and are in this bookand would have a nonstop baking marathon from morning to night until all the treats were made and decorated. We had a blast, and it soon became an annual tradition.

Just before my nineteenth birthday, my parents moved to Dallas, Texas, while I stayed behind in Southern California. I wanted to continue the one-day-a-year cookie-baking tradition on my own, but since finances were tight, I had to buy the necessary ingredients a little at a time each week, until I finally had everything I needed to make all my cookie recipes. It was so much fun, and no matter the size of my kitchen (I moved a lot!) I always managed to find space to complete every batch in one day, even if it meant allowing cookies to cool on top of my boxy television.

As the years went on, many things changed: My husband, Jeff, and I married in 2012, and I became a stepmom to Jeffs lovely daughters, Bree, Ashlyn, and Kenna. My parents moved back to Southern California in 2013, and my twin boys, Jack and James, were born in 2015. But no matter what, throughout the years, each and every December there were Christmas cookies. Sometimes Id bake them on my own, other times with Bree, Ashlyn, or Kenna there to help decorate. These days, I most often bake with my boys, usually with Jeff or my parents somewhere nearby to help out, take photos, and make sure Jack and James dont feed the cookie dough to our dog, Roadie.

Now that Bree and her husband Eric have brought baby Harrison into the world, I know there are many more years of Christmas cookie-baking memories to be made, as our family continues to grow.
