PROBLEM
We want to do something, we know we should do it, but we persuade ourselves to either do something else instead or wait until the future.
We want to go to the gym, we know we should go but itll be OK if we skip today, go next week and sit down to watch TV for a few hours. Next week is always next week and after a year our gym shoes still look like new because theyve never been used.
We deserve a pay raise at work, we know we should ask for one, but itll be better if we wait until next month when were up to date with all our work and then ask. Next month is always next month and after a year our pay is still the same because we never get up to date with work so dont ask for a pay raise.
We choose the easy option or wait for the perfect time. We persuade ourselves that this is the best decision. The reality is that before we know it, our default behavior is inaction and every time a window of opportunity pops open it slams shut instantly. This leads to life goals never being realized, feelings of low self-esteem and feeling guilty because we know we can do better.
SCIENCE
Neuroscience has proven there to be clear reasons for this inaction behavior with the root cause of inaction being our unconscious brains striving to keep us alive and safe. Our brains are trying to help us but in our modern reality, they hold us back.
