Chapter Where to Begin
Despite the fact that modern technology now makes it possible for a quilt to be created in record time, a lot of women still hold on to the traditional way of quilting. Some women are lucky enough to begin quilting under the guidance of a more experienced mentor, such as an elderly relative or member of the community. But for those who want to quilt without a guide, it can sometimes be difficult to find a starting point. For these people, the best starting point is to make sure that they have all the necessary tools that are needed for the quilting process.
But in order to get a good idea of which tools to buy at the supermarket, beginners would first have to gain a good understanding of how the quilting process flows. This flow is simplified through the following steps:
- Selection. This process involves selecting the quilts pattern and design. It also involves choosing which fabrics to use, as well as the batting that would be used as the quilts filling.
- Measurement. The fabric would have to be measured in order to match the pattern. This also involves cutting the fabric into precise blocks that would then be pieced together in order to form the final quilt design.
- Layering. Piecing the fabric blocks together is just the first step in quilting. After the final pieces have been sewn in, the backing would then have to be attached. The batting would then be sandwiched between the top and bottom layers.
- Sewing. Quilters can either hand-stitch or use a sewing machine for sewing the layers of the quilt together. Another layer that needs to be added as a finishing touch is the binding along the edges of the quilt. This binding covers up the edges of the quilt so that it wont look raw. It also secures all three layers together.
- Trimming. This involves trimming any extra thread, fabric, and batting that may be protruding on the edges of the quilt.
Knowing these steps lets any beginner understand that the tools they would need for quilting include items for measuring, cutting, and sewing.
Basic Terminology
If you have some background knowledge about quilting, ther e s a chance that you already know that the ter m squar e refers to the small block of fabric sewn with other blocks to create a bigger quilt. The number of squares used varies depending on the quilt size and the pattern. There are other important terms, which could help you understand the process of quilting and find new patterns to use.
