Introduction
My first quilt was made primarily out of necessity, but I never imagined how addicted I would become. I started sewing by making my own clothes and accessories, and anyone who sews will tell you how quick and easy it is to amass a huge stash of fabric scraps after only a few projects. I had squirreled away an unmanageable trove of material beneath my bed, and I tried every trick up my sleeve to get rid of it: gift purses for friends, matching hats for all my outfits, and every other trinket made from fabric you can imagine.
But I was ignoring the elephant in the roomquilts. I learned from sewing books that a quilt is the quintessential scrap-busting project, used for that very purpose from the onset of sewing history. But I was convinced that quilting was way beyond my abilityit seemed like an art only practiced by skilled masters who could sew precise /" (6mm) seams without even looking and used an arsenal of templates, rulers, and guides for even the most basic projects. I felt I couldnt even think about quilting until I was a veteran sewer. Meanwhile, my closets were quickly filling with scraps and I was drowning in fabric.
I decided I had to sew myself out of the fabric pile I had created. I didnt have many of the fancy templates and tools that dedicated quilters do, but I studied to find shortcuts, tricks, and techniques that allowed me to make the quilt I wanted without so many hard and fast rules.
Even though my first quilt was unusual, to say the leastmade from an eclectic mix of satins, denim, and cotton with more than a handful of wonky seams and frayed edgesI was surprised by how much I loved the process. I found it breathtaking watching a tiny swatch of fabric slowly grow into a massive quilt top through all that piecing. And I loved how quilting turned a random pile of fabric into an intricate collage with so much depth and texture. I was immediately hooked.

Why Quilting Can Seem Daunting, and Why It Doesnt Have to Be
Ive come across many other sewers who are intimidated to attempt a full-fledged quilt, and Ive been there myself. A quilt will be a little more costly and time-intensive than other sewing projects, but it doesnt need to feel so overwhelming if you keep the right attitude.
Cost. Keep it simple: Designer, high-quality fabrics are a treat to work with, but a little pricey. If youre making something large, or not sure what youll design just yet, consider buying solid colors of your favorite brands. Theyre often much cheaper than their printed counterparts and are a fun way to experiment.
Time. Break it up: An incredibly large or intricate quilt can take weeks or even months to complete. But if you take it one block or one row at time, you can enjoy the journey and focus without getting overwhelmed.
Process. Take the scenic route: The guidelines and techniques in this book are just thatguidelines, best practice methods to ensure you end up happy with your project. There will always be new ways to build a quilt, and maybe youll be the one to find them! Unless you plan to enter a quilt show or expect your creation to stay pristine for centuries, have a little fun, go against the grain, and try something new.
Fresh Designs in Quilting
Its so easy to make fresh, modern quilts to suit your taste. Start with the overall look. You can alter a more traditional design to a sleek and bold aesthetic, using bright, saturated colors in contrast with the cool neutrals gray and white. Try some large and graphic designs, perhaps something geometric, with big expanses of negative space.
Beyond that, dont be afraid to break some of the more traditional rules and find new paths. You can simplify the process by using some non-traditional methods that make quilting faster and easier. I think an attitude of experimentation, improvisation, and bold, simple design is perfect for budding quilters. If you feel at all apprehensive about getting started, this book will be your gentle reminder to keep trying new things, making mistakes, and celebrating the simple things you get right rather than worrying over what you get wrong.
