Introduction

Crochet is a fiber art. It is believed that crochet originated in Arabia and then spread across Europe. Crochet is derived from the French word croche which means hook. Crochet is a wonderful craft and was used in Ireland by families during the potato famine so that they could sell items to buy food and other necessities.

Crochet is fabulous because you can use it to make practically anything. Some of the most commonly crocheted items include blankets, stuffed animals, scarves, and cardigans. Yet, it can be used to make pillows, other home dcor items, baby booties, mittens, and more. If youre interested in making it, there is a pattern for it somewhere.

In this book, youre going to learn about the items that you need to get started with crocheting. Then, youre going to learn how to do some of the basic stitches. Youll also learn how to read patterns.

Chapter 1 Tools of the Trade

There are a few things that you need in order to get started in the wonderful world of crocheting. If you go to Walmart, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, or Jo-anns you will be able to find crochet kits designed for beginners. These kits come with the most common sized hooks that youre going to need and a book. Some come with a DVD. Some come with a darning needle. Lets talk in detail about the items that you need to get started.

Crochet Hooks

I love crochet hooks. I suppose you could say that I am a bit of a collector. Personally, I stick to using the hooks that once belonged to my grandmother. They are aluminum hooks. Youll find crochet hooks that are aluminum. Youll see some that are plastic or acrylic. Youll see some that are made from wood. Those are the most common types. So, which should you use? My general rule of thumb as someone with almost 35 years of crocheting under my belt is to buy the type that feel best to you. I use aluminum because, as I said, they belonged to my grandmother, but thats not the only reason. They are smooth and that helps the yarn move well. Ive tried plastic hooks. Theyre okay for the most part. Yet, if they get a chip in the plastic, your yarn could snag on it. Wooden hooks are generally the most expensive (but they are beautiful). You might also want to get some comfort grips. They look like the little padded pencil holders. They are sold by the crochet hooks. The only downside to those is that they usually cover the size indicator of the hook.

Speaking of size, lets talk about exactly which crochet hooks you should buy. Crochet hooks are sold in both millimeter and American sizes. When I say American sizes, I mean that they have letters on them. The hook sizes you should buy to start out with are E, F, G, H, I, J, P, Q, and S. And P, Q, and S are going to be really, really big (and you will likely only find those in plastic).

Generally speaking, the smaller the hook (E and below), the finer the yarn you will use because your stitches will be smaller. There are much smaller hooks that E hooks, but you would usually use thread for those. To avoid frustration, you shouldnt start with thread crochet (although it is amazingly beautiful). An E hook is commonly used when you are making toys or something for a baby like booties or a blanket. As the hook letters move up the alphabet, they also move up in size. An S hook is sometimes referred to in a pattern as a speed hook. This is because of its size and because you would most often use it with two or three strands of yarn at once. It just works up faster than traditional crochet.

Darning Needle

Youre going to need a darning needle. I have metal ones and I have plastic ones that are slightly flexible. When you finish a crochet project, you dont use a knot to tie it off. Rather, you finish it (which I will explain in the next chapter) and then you use the darning needle to weave the end of the yarn into the work. You should get a few different sizes of darning needles. While you could use a bigger metal needle for heavy blankets or scarves, you wouldnt want to use it on finer yarn because you could damage the yarn. Thats why I also have plastic darning needles.

Row Counter

When you crochet, your work is either done in rows or it is done in rounds. A row is when you work back and forth. A round means that you are working in a circle. Patterns all have row or round numbers. You have a couple of options. You can either just keep a notebook and write down the number youre on after ever row or round or you could purchase a row counter. Row counters are usually found with the knitting supplies. Some are hollow and you could theoretically place it over the end of your crochet hook. Ive found that to be inconvenient and slow me down. I just keep mine in my project bag. They also have digital row counters. The thing to keep in mind is that the button is really sensitive. If you barely touch it, it could change your row number. If the battery in it dies, you could have to count your project by hand to figure out what youre doing.

Safety Pins

Safety pins are a crocheters best friend. While there are stitch markers that you can buy, I find those to be a bit cumbersome. I use small safety pins to mark the beginning of a round or to mark a stitch that I am told to mark in a pattern.

Yarn Choices

Finally, you need yarn for your project. The type of yarn that you choose to use will depend on your project. If youre using a pattern, it will tell you the type of yarn and will usually tell you in ounces how much you need to buy. Heres a little hint about buying yarn. If your pattern says that youre going to need 40 ounces of a specific yarn, buy it all at once. At one point, we did it this way because of dye lots (colors). They may change the color in between the time you buy all of your yarn and your project wouldnt be uniform. Now, thats not the problem. The problem iswhat if the place you buy your yarn stops carrying that particular brand or color? Always buy all of the yarn you need for your project at one time.
