Introduction
A little over a decade ago , I started the company ClassPass, a fitness and wellness membership that allows members to book classes and experiences online. What most people dont know is that my original vision for ClassPass was for it to be a LifePassa way to connect to soul-nurturing experiences, fitness, and beyond.
While ClassPass has soared to millions of reservations across the globe, ClassPass is not just about classes. It is about keeping our passions alive and continuing to discover and evolve even as we get older. Every life, fully lived is our vision statement. Its a way for each person to do the most with the hours of their day, a message this book similarly aims to impart.
LifePass shares my philosophy and offers a guide for living a fulfilled life. People frequently ask me how I was able to craft a career and life out of the things I loved. The answer is always the same: a lot of self-reflection and planning!
It took hard work, but it was worth it. And more so, I believe the methodology Ive created can be used by anyone to unleash a life of fulfillment, joy, and purpose. I wrote this book to share it with you. In LifePass, I walk you through the step-by-step process I used so you can do it yourself. If I were sitting with you, these are the questions Id ask and the steps Id tell you to take.
In conversations and collaborations with incredible entrepreneurs and creators in my own journey, as well as through developing a goal-setting process and sharing it with others, Ive discovered that there are common things that hold people back. I frequently hear people saying things like, I cant do what I love because I dont have enough money or time, or I didnt know the right people, or I didnt pursue my dream because I lacked a certain skill. Even deeper than this are the internal limits of not knowing what drives us, feeling like we dont fit in, the expectations of others, and of course, the fear of failure that can prevent us from even getting started.
I have faced and often still face all of these gating factors. But I have found a way to work through these constraints. Instead of feeling that I cant do what I love because of obstacles, Ive learned to break through those barriers to accomplish what I want. Ive found a way to live free of limits, and my hope is to help others develop that mindset as well.
To do this, we need new tools and a new way of thinking. Many constraints, as well as our experiences, can shape the way we think, but its possible to work through the limits that exist in our minds. This involves asking deep questions about our past and examining any difficult times to identify what may be standing in our way. Once we do this, we can develop a plan for moving forward and going after our dreams. Having a plan is like donning a parachute before jumping out of an airplane. In this book, we will build your parachute so that you can safely, securely, and confidently take the leap youve always wanted.
Life is full of practical considerations. We need to pay bills and take care of our responsibilities to family, work, and so on. But that does not mean that we cant also go for what we want in our lives. By shifting our perceptions and developing a plan, we can approach apparent limits and constraints so these things work for us instead of against us.
Part 1 focuses on shifting perceptions by identifying the ways we might be mentally hindering our journey. This starts with identifying and clarifying our calling. I discuss how to find it and follow it, and the importance of protecting it. Next, I discuss identity and expectations. How we see ourselves and the expectations others set might also be getting in the way, but we can shift both of these things to improve our efforts and foster success. Lastly, I discuss fear and self-doubt, and how to embrace our emotions so that we always keep moving forward.
Part 2 focuses on four common issues everyone must deal with: money, personal skills, other people, and time. People often experience each of these as constraints. But we can shift our relationships and current patterns within each area to break through these seeming barriers and turn them into opportunity.
Throughout, I illustrate these lessons by sharing my own personal story, but my main goal is for you to pause and reflect on your own wants, needs, patterns, and life. To kick-start this, each chapter includes Self-Check Points with questions and exercises, and as you read, you may want to have a notebook and pen handy (or a computer or phone to take notes on) so you can pause and write down your thoughts in the moment. Each chapter also ends with a mantra for you to internalize and carry forward.
