Dedication
This book is dedicated to the most amazing father. I am blessed that you are mine. Thank you for passing on to me your love of adventure and trying new things. Without your courageous spirit blazing continuous new paths, Im not sure Id have had the guts to try everything I have. Thank you for the constant love and support. Knowing I have you in my corner means I never need to be worried about failing. Lastly, thank you and Mom for showing me what true love looks like. Because of you, I was able to recognize it when I found it.
Ming
M iss Chen. I stopped and whipped around in the hallway as Dr. Burke approached. The man was like a ninja. Somehow his polished loafers never made a squeak on the linoleum as he slinked around the halls. It was well known that Burke was always on the lookout, trying to catch residents doing something wrong.
He was a prick and a half, and he didnt even try to hide it. A smarmy smile spread over his face as I plastered a pleasant look on my own. Good evening Dr. Burke. Id just come out of the locker room and as far as he knew, I was heading home.
Im going to need you to take a look at Ms. Walters in room nine, he said without exchanging any pleasantries.
I had to bite the inside of my cheek to keep from saying anything. Ms. Walters was his patient, not mine, but I worked hard to keep a professional attitude at the hospital. It wasnt only my reputation on the line, but my fathers as well. It wasnt unusual for Burke to unload his patients off on the residents, so this wasnt anything new to me.
Oh. He pulled an empty alcohol swab packet from his pocket that had scribbles on it. I watched him mutter over it as the lights reflected off the bald spot on the top of his head. All of our charting was done in our computer system, so we tended to write down notes on anything we could find. Some days that ended up being my arm if I couldnt find any loose scraps of paper.
Better see to Mr. Bennett in room five as well, he finally said after he was able to decipher his note.
Great, I responded. My clipped tone had him looking up from the packet.
Is there something wrong?
Of course not, Doctor, I said, with a toothy smile that probably looked more like a grimace. This was supposed to be the one day I would get out of here early. I planned to do a little snooping around, then head home. We were trying to figure out who from the hospital was working with Bridgets dad and godfather, and so far, Id found a whole lot of nothing.
We learned last week that Fentanyl was being stolen from my hospital. They shipped Miguel Guzmans cocaine over from Mexico, cut it with the Fentanyl, then the Lycans sold it here in Austin. Id told the Vikings MC that Id look into it and see if I could help figure out who at my hospital was in on it. We still needed to find out how the hospital was getting the mislabeled Fentanyl that allowed the Lycans to syphon off the extra to be given to Miguel Guzman. Rat was looking into that by researching the company it was coming from.
I watched as Burke practically pranced down the hall. The jerk was dumping all his work off onto me and he was going home early while I was stuck here. Taking care of his patients meant I wouldnt have time to snoop around now that most of the staff had left for the day.
Sighing, I headed to the nurses station and checked the notes thatd been logged into the computer before going to see them. On my way there, my phone vibrated. Glancing around to make sure Burke wasnt lurking in the shadows, I pulled it out of my pocket.
Mom: Dinner tonight at 8.
Tipping my head back, I groaned at the ceiling. Ignoring my parents dinners was asking for a lecture that would last weeks. I quickly responded, then stepped into the first patients room.
* * *
I hurried through the parking garage toward my car. It was already eight-thirty, and I knew Id never hear the end of it from my mother. No wonder Burke had pawned those two patients off on me. They both needed me to go through an endless array of questions. Normally I wouldnt have minded, but since Id already been in detective mode, it was hard not to check out on them.
The sound of something clattering in the shadowy garage made me pause. Listening hard, I scanned my surroundings, trying to peer into the dark corners where the lights didnt reach. Theyd spared no expense on the remodel of the hospital a few years ago, but the garage was a whole other story. They wouldnt even spare the money to change out some of the burnt-out bulbs.
It made walking alone at night beyond creepy. Most of the nurses were quite vocal about not wanting to work night shifts because of it. When nothing else happened, I slowly continued making my way, still looking around and staying alert.
It was only a short time ago that my friend Bridget had been kidnapped by a cartel, and then wed all been run off the road by an MC working for themthe Lycans. Since then, my friends and I had been living with the Vikings. Two of my friends, Remi and Bridget, were dating members, and since we all lived together, they decided it was best to move all five of us in.
Cade had club members watching over me at the hospital since we found out that Bridgets dad was mixed up in a situation involving the cartel, mafia, and God knows who else.
Id told my bodyguards to take off once I found out I was going to be late, though. They insisted they could wait, but there was no reason we all had to be late getting home.
Scraping sounds filled the air, and a shiver skittered down my spine. I glanced longingly in the direction of my car, but it was still a ways away. The scratching sound came louder. I wasnt about to have someone jumping out at me from the dark when I was unprepared.
Biting my lip to keep from calling outgirls who did that in horror movies always diedI slowly pulled a little pocket knife out of the purse that was slung across my shoulder. There were many doctors who took their Hippocratic Oath to do no harm very seriously. I, on the other hand, totally planned to gut anyone who thought theyd hurt me. I wasnt above a little bloodshed, and I knew exactly where to strike to do the most damage.
I turned on the flashlight app on my phone and pointed it toward where the sounds were coming from. Stepping out of the wavering light of a single bulb that was still desperately battling the darkness, I shuffled forward. The scraping sound came from my left and I whipped around, holding my phone out in front of me as if that could ward off any evil.
The rat squeaked and scurried away into the dark. Bleh, disgusting, I muttered. My heart was racing, and I tried to even out my breathing. Sneaking around and playing detective was more Remi and Bridgets speed than mine. I didnt like the anticipation or excitement that came along with being scared. Thats why I was a bummer at amusement parks. I preferred to keep my feet on the ground and off the unstable death-traps those rides were.
What the hell are you doing?
My scream echoed loudly in the parking garage as I whirled around and faced whoever had come in behind me. Axel winced, both at the sheer volume of my scream and at the bright light that was now blinding him. He didnt seem nearly as concerned as he should have been about the knife.
