This ones for you.

With love and respect,

JAMES & LAURENTINE

At Food Matters, we firmly believe that you are what you eat. We know this because weve seen it firsthand.

In 2003, my father, Roy, was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndromeone of a growing list of mystery illnesses that have no specific known cause or treatment, according to the medical profession. At the time, we didnt realize how much this was going to impact our lives. We thought we could outsource his treatment to our family doctor and move on. How wrong we were...

For the next five years, most of his days were spent in bed, and his nights were often filled with sweaty panic attacks, the anticipated side effects of his medications. He had gained more than 50 pounds, was increasingly lethargic, and suffered from depression.

Not one medical professional suggested he change his diet or eating habits, nor did they recommend different ways to handle stress. Not surprisingly, his health began to deteriorate further.

We knew we had to intervene. But every attempt to help was met with keen resistance.

We got ahold of every book we could find and started researching. We soon learned that healthy food and the power of nutrition could be used to heal. We also discovered that our health care, food, and agricultural industries were not particularly concerned with our health. They were primarily interested in profits. We couldnt believe what we were uncovering. Our new discoveries inspired us to formalize our knowledge through studying nutrition online to gain the tools to help heal my father.

At first, there were more questions than answers. Why didnt my fathers doctor know about the power of nutrition and natural therapies to heal? And why were we not taught this in school? But slowly we started to see the bigger picture.

Studying nutrition led to us traveling the world interviewing many of the experts we had been studying to create the Food Matters film. While we struggled with interventions and couldnt motivate my father to read a 300-page book on natural healing, we figured we could probably convince him to watch a film.

We invested our lifes savings into the making of Food Matters, traveling from Holland (Laurentines home country) and England to the East and West Coasts of the United States, and then Australia (Jamess home country), interviewing doctors, nutritionists, scientists, and wellness experts on how to heal the body naturally.

We brought all the footage home to my father and proclaimed that we werent leaving the house until he got well. Before long, he was hooked. What stood out, he told us later, was the story of how one of the medications he was on had been known to cause suicidal thoughts. This was his worst fear and something he had recently been experiencing.

Not only was the current approach not helping him, it was making him worse. Almost immediately, through access to this new information, he had a paradigm shift. He went from believing in a fully drug-based approach to healing, to believing in his bodys innate capacity to heal itself.

As Andrew Saul, Ph.D., from Food Matters says, We need education, not medication.

Now that he was on board, we began a pantry audit to contraband all the fake and processed food that wasnt real. This included many so-called health foods and diet products, all the processed foods and refined vegetable oils, and all the factory-farmed meat and dairy. We then guided him through a clean-eating program by adding more and more healthy foods to his diet.

Within weeks, his energy started to return. He was out of bed, moving freely and energetically around the house. He regained confidence in the kitchen again, creating healthy and delicious meals made from scratch using real, whole-food ingredients. After five years of daily medication, within one month he was off all of his meds and experienced zero side effects or withdrawal symptoms. Within three months, he had lost 50 pounds, was no longer anxious or depressed, was sleeping through the night, and woke up each morning refreshed and ready for the day. He even started running and exercising again, something he hadnt done in years. He was a completely transformed version of himself.

It was one of the most amazing transformations I have ever witnessed. And as a positive side effect, we had my father back, and our family became closer than it had ever been before.

Laurentine and I knew that this information was powerful and that we had to share this knowledge and the documentary with as many people as possible. Since the films release in 2008, Food Matters has been seen by millions of people online, in theaters, on television, on airlines, and even in hospitals and community centers around the world, from Connecticut to Cambodia, in nine different languages.

After Food Matters was released, we went on to produce three more documentaries, including Hungry for Change and Transcendence seasons 1 and 2, most of which have been featured on Netflix, Gaia, and iTunes, and are available to stream on FoodMatters.com.

To this day, we feel grateful to have helped my father turn his life around and inspire a community of millions around the world to do the same.
