We didnt grow up with a slow cooker in our house. In fact, I dont think my parents even knew what it was. They were both great cooks and taught the three of us kids how to make freshly prepared meals at an early age. By the time we were in high school, my brothers and I would take turns making dinner and adding our own spins on the meals we made.It wasnt until my husband and I got married that I started experimenting with the slow cooker we received for Christmas that year. We both worked long hours during the week so I loved the idea of having a hot meal waiting for us when we got home.At first I was just sticking to the basics and making mostly soups and stews. Then once we had our son, my time in the kitchen had to be quick, which took a lot of fun out of cooking. I started to miss the comforting meals I grew up making as well as our favorite restaurant dishes. Dining out with a baby was challenging at times, so we didnt go out to eat much when he was younger. This led me to want to learn how to make our favorite restaurant dishes at home. Using my slow cooker meant I could still finish folding the laundry or play with our son while our meal was cooking. As he got older, things got a little bit easier, and I was able to spend more time in the kitchen again. It was during this time that I started my blog, Life Made Sweeter. It became my creative outlet and I found a new joy for cooking again. My son was a great eater and became my inspiration for many of the recipes I made. When my daughter was born, my time in the kitchen fixing our meals became much more challenging again. She was (and still is) extremely attached to me, and would cry if my husband, my mom or anyone other than me tried to hold her. So now with two young kids in the kitchen by my feet, I once again turned to my trusty slow cooker to help me get dinner on the table. The slow cooker was such a lifesaver for me during those busy weeknights. I could quickly prep the ingredients I needed when my youngest was taking her afternoon nap and toss everything into the crock pot. That way, when she woke up, dinner would still be cooking, but I wouldnt have to be stirring anything by the stove when both the kids wanted my attention during their restless hours. It worked out great, because we would all get to eat a hot meal by the time my husband got home from work. This book covers some of my favorite Asian recipes that can be partially or fully made in the slow cooker, as well as common skillet and one-pot wonders. They include traditional dishes I grew up making, food from my travels through Asia, popular takeout favorites, hidden restaurant gems, modern twists on classics, kid-friendly meals and delectable desserts. Some of these use shortcuts with only 5 ingredients or less, along with easy set-and-forget meals, making them perfect for busy weeknights. Then there are those that call for traditional from-scratch ingredients along with browning or sauting things before placing them in the slow cooker. All of these recipes are meant for anyone who wants to explore new and exciting ways to prepare Asian cuisine at home. I believe making them in the slow cooker helps to take the fear out of cooking with traditional and unfamiliar Asian ingredients, since it does most of the work for you. It minimizes worry about burning food, and can help to enhance flavor development. Plus it saves you time with the ability to plan ahead.Using the slow cooker to create meals that I grew up on and feel a strong cultural connection with has allowed me to appreciate making meals for my family again.
