PART 3
Step-by-Step Instructions
Fusible Interfacing and Batting
Information/Accessories
Introduction
For this book, I created many projects
with animals as the theme.
Part 1 features a playful alphabet
menagerie of popular pets and wildlife,
including mammals, sea life, insects, and
even the mythical unicorn. I didnt want
to leave out the cold-blooded critters,
so the design includes some reptiles and
amphibians as well. The individual alpha
bet pieces representing these diverse crea
tures are quilted together to co-exist in a
harmonious whole, which I hope will serve
as a metaphor for our world.
Part 2 includes various projects such
as bags and pouches, objects that I use
daily or would like to have. Its uplifting
to see a favorite animal incorporated via
patchwork or appliqu into these every
day items, isnt it? I would love it if the
projects in this book catch your eye and
inspire you to try your hand at creature
themed creations.

PART 1
Animals from A to Z
Here are 26 creatures from various habitats representing the
letters of the alphabet. The lively assortment of well-known
mammals, fish and insects is a delight.
Ant and Beaver
A quiet peek into the soil beneath the tree root reveals a bustling ant nest.
They are busily carrying food. On the other side, a beaver is equally busy
building a dam. Such hard workers!
Instructions on
Hippopotamus
The open-mouthed hippo is thoroughly enjoying its shower. The pink of
the mouth and green of the alphabet letter add pops of bright color.
Instructions on
Owl
A forest hidden in the night, the white glow of the moon in the sky.
The owl spreads its wings and silently takes flight.
Instructions on
Frog
Splash! The piece captures the energetic moment when the frog
jumps out of the water onto the water lily leaf.
Instructions on
Turtle
Although the turtle plods slowly on land, it is a relatively fast
swimmer. The turtle shell is constructed with piecework.
Instructions on
Lion
The expression of this king of the beasts
is full of charm. The embroidery creates a
sense of flow for the mane and chest fur.
Instructions on
Quail
You can practically see this adorable quail tottering
about with its rounded body. The pattern on the
fabric represents the feathers.
Instructions on
Crocodile
The crocodile is a fierce beast, yet theres some
thing humorous about its ambling, slow gait.
The bright flash of color on its belly is extra-fun.
Instructions on
Mole
Perhaps the bright sunlight lured this curious mole from its hidey-hole.
Notice the characteristic large claws that make moles such good diggers.
Instructions on
Skunk
The dramatic white stripe across its back and tail is the skunks visual trade
mark. The embroidered stitches create the texture of the fur.
Instructions on
Iguana
A vivid green iguana basking in a single ray of sunlight. Note the
detailed characteristics such as the throat pouch and spiky spine.
Instructions on
Newt
Newts are amphibians that live on the surface of the water. The embroidery
is quite realistic. This newt looks like it could slither away like a ninja.
Instructions on
Yabby
Waving about its large claws, the yabby appears to be
chasing the newt here. The fabric stripes differentiate
the body (horizontal) from the tail (vertical).
Instructions on
Zebra
The zebra stands still upon the savanna, eyes closed. Striped fabric is
ideal for the zebra. The tufted tail is embroidered.
Instructions on
Elephant
This waterside elephant looks extra-adorable with its slightly puzzled
expression. Through the use of fabric textures and colors, the subtle
interplay of light and shadow is enhanced for the ears and back legs.
Instructions on
Giraffe
This sweet giraffe is happily munching on berries that are high up in the branches.
The yellow and brown fabric for the letter g matches the giraffes color scheme.
Instructions on
Kangaroo
The mama kangaroo jumps buoyantly across the sunbaked grass and
dessert. How cute is the little joey peeking out from her pouch?
Instructions on
Penguin
The penguin parent and its chick chat on an Antarctic ice floe. The
baby penguin is spreading its wings, animating the scene.
Instructions on
Xiphias gladius
The common name for xiphias gladius is swordfish, Its
characterized by the long, thin protrusion at the jaw. You can
practically feel the strength of the large, spindle-shaped body
as it swims toward the surface of the water.
Instructions on
Jellyfish
These jellyfish gently undulate and float with the rhythm of the water.
Their semi-transparent bodies move as if they are taking deep breaths.
Instructions on
Unicorn
The legendary creature with a singular, iconic horn atop
its head: the unicorn. This one gallops across the big sky,
with its mane flowing in the wind.
Instructions on
Dragonfly
A red dragonfly softly alights upon the tip of a fence. Fabric with a
latticed design was used for the globular eyes. Fabric with gradated
color works beautifully for the wings.
Instructions on
Rabbit
Hop! With its hind legs high up in the air,
this rabbit is full of energy. It can probably
jump over that full moon.
Instructions on
Vulture
The vulture has a distinctive bald head, and long feathers fringe the base of
the neck like a boa scarf. Theres something noble about a vulture staring
out over the world while perched on a cliff.
Instructions on
Whale
The fabrics pattern depicts the tides and water bubbles, and the
whale appears to be swimming deep in the sea. Its half-closed eyes
makes it appear very relaxed.
