"Marvin Charles was born to lead. He has overcome a chaotic childhood, addictive behaviors, and many poor decisions to become a committed husband, a humble father, and a trailblazer in the national effort to restore the father/child relationship.
Marvin's on the ground leadership in greater Seattle has helped hundreds of fathers and children get reconnected. The success of his D.A.D.S. program and its outcomes distinguishes Marvin among many initiatives seeking to improve child well-being through responsible fatherhood. In his first book. Becoming Dads: The Mission to Restore Absent Fathers, he reveals his story, and the strategy and lessons he's learned about strengthening the father/child bond in the most difficult circumstances.
I heartily support and believe that Marvin and D.A.D.S. are leaving a legacy that will last. His book makes an important contribution to our understanding of the role fathers should play in their children's lives, and how to begin even if they are at 'ground zero.' Buy a copy; it's a quick read and you'll gain new insights in every chapter."
Ken R. Canfield, Founder, National Center for Fathering
"Marvin Charles' story will take you on a journey from hopelessness to victory, from ruin to restoration. His epic mission to restore absent fathers profoundly matters to anyone who cares about the deep impact of fatherlessness in this nation. Read Becoming Dads. No matter where you are, you'll find hope, find vision, find coaching, and find inspiration. In cities and suburbs, in rescue missions, prisons, or anywhere else, this story and mission must spread!"
Jeff Kemp, Former NFL Quarterback, VP, FamilyLife, and author of Facing The Blitz
Becoming Dads, from its very first sentence, draws you in and holds you captive until its conclusion. It breaks your heart, and just when you think it can't get any worseit does! But Marvin refuses to quit, not only in his efforts to break his own chain of pain, but his family's and his community's as well. This is an incredible story of hope, faith, and transformation! Someone should make a movie about Marvin and Jeanett's story of redemption."
Dr. Clarence Shuler, President/CEO, Building Lasting Relationships
"Our hearts hunger for true stories of redemption. Often, though, transformational, before-and-after stories sound too good to be true. Such is not the case for this account of Marvin and Jeanett Charles' life. It's painfully gritty, as it honestly portrays abandonment, rejection, and bad choices. Life is messy, and there is no neat, sweet, tied-up-with-a-pretty-bow kind of magical resolution. Rather, Marvin and Jeanett honestly portray the daily choices required to continue to walk "the straight life." They invite us to face with honesty, courage, and confidence the daily choice to seek God's redemption of the consequences of our past and the pains of the present, in anticipation of the joyous hope of the future.
There's yet another dimension to their story, one that speaks to us all. It's the story of our search for home, a place where we're safe, known, welcomed, and embraced. Through their own losses and restoration, Marvin and Jeanett have been used by God to help thousands of others come homeand I believe there's nothing our orphaned and homeless world needs more than to experience the welcoming embrace of our Heavenly Father, and the human embrace of our earthly ones."
Tim Dearborn, PhD., Director, Ogilvie Institute for Preaching, Fuller Theological Seminary
"I read this book in one sitting. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. The story of Marvin Charles' life is absolutely gripping and profoundly inspiring. He overcame huge personal challenges and is now helping other men do the same, with the help of God. I admire Marvin and his wife, Jeanett, more than any couple I've ever known."
John Hamer, Founder, Washington News Council
Becoming Dads is beautifully written, thoughtfully presented, and impactful. I read the book in one day - literally couldn't put it down. It was eye-opening for me in many ways. I had not realized how the system rewards women who remain single, thus helping push fathers from their families. I also gained an understanding of just how seductive the "pimp and drug" outlaw style must be to a young man growing up in poverty. In Marvin's shoes, I wonder if I would have made the same choices. I applaud Marvin's courage in revealing the less heroic aspects of his life. Here lies is the brilliance of this book. Because of its searing honesty and intelligence, it carries the reader past judgment into compassion."

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I want to express my sincere appreciation for the many people from different sectors of my life that have contributed to my life and to this book. I will try my best to remember all of you, but if I don't, please blame it on my head and not my heart:
My birth parents, Doris and Willie, who gave me life, and the brothers, and sisters I was fortunate enough to have been reunited with before this life was over: Benoris, Audrey, Chris, and Hulett
Edward and Nora Charles, who had the courage to take two adopted children and raise them as their own
My sister, Marion Charles, my nieces Chessie and Lashawntae, and nephews Juion and Terence who saw the dark side and have also witnessed my life in the light
My brothers, Rick and Wesley Cotton, who gave me my first look at what I longed to have growing upa family that would call me "son," and Wesley and Emma Cotton who actually called me their son: Marvin L. Charles-Cotton
