Working with Stones Found in Nature Mickie Mueller I know so many people - photo 3

Working with Stones
Found in Nature

Mickie Mueller

I know so many people with shelves, boxes, bags, jars, and bottles full of crystals and stones. Yep, Im one of them. I love working with stones in my Witchcraft and my stones are very treasured, from the biggest crystal cluster to the smallest tumbled pieces. Some of the stones I use in my Witchcraft didnt come from a mineral show, metaphysical shop, or online boutique, and some just look like plain rocks at first glance. A closer look reveals that they are a diverse collection of textures, colors, shapes, and sizes, and each comes with a story instead of a price tag. These are rocks that I found myself or were gifted by someone else who found them in nature. For a Witch who looks at the whole world and everything in it through magical eyes, these are powerful treasures to own and work with.

There are lots of reasons to collect and work magically with rocks and stones that you find in nature. For Witches in the broom closet, what looks like an interesting rock found on a hike can be a secret magical powerhouse that you can use without raising any suspicion. A found rock is also a wonderful tool for Witches on a tight budget! Something about using a found rock in my spellwork also feels so very personal, and it awakens my inner childas a child, I used to pick up every interesting rock I saw because I knew it must be magic! Spoiler: I was right about that, and so was your inner child with pockets full of rocks!

Another great reason to use found minerals to boost your collection is that as - photo 4

Another great reason to use found minerals to boost your collection is that as the Witchcraft movement grows, there are so many unethical crystal mines out there that it can be a challenge to locate stones that were gathered with thought and care toward the earth and the people employed in mining them. Its always a good idea to research and ask questions when purchasing your stones, making sure to find out about the sources and learn more about mining and human rights practices of the areas where your stones are mined. Ethical sources can cost a bit more, but they are worth it. The good news is that when you find a stone on the ground, you know exactly where it came from and the circumstances in which it was gathered.

Getting started isnt as hard as you might think. Even if youre longing for the gorgeous crystal towers your fellow Witches are showing off on their social media accounts, I promise that when the thrill of rockhounding bears fruit and you find that special piece just waiting in nature for you, your witchy heart will fill up! I think theyre beautiful, magical, and inspiring. All you really need is pockets and a location to get startedand of course, your intention for the right stone to find you.

Setting Your Intention to Find a Stone

When I go out for a walk, Im not always looking for a rock but sometimes one will catch my eye. Other times I will set an intention ahead of time that Im looking for natural supplies for a specific magical purpose. That might be planning a spell, a sabbat celebration, some personal challenge that Im trying to overcome, or even a specific mindset that Im trying to nurture, so when Im out for a walk, I set an intention to find what I need.

This is quite simple to do: as I leave the house, I simply state in my mind something like May I be guided to find a stone to support my health or If there is a stone that wants to help with my protection spell, please draw my attention. I usually find a special stone when I do this, perhaps a rock with an interesting stripe down the middle, an unusual color, an interesting shape, or a bit of sparkle. Remember, this isnt the same as shopping for a crystal because, of course, you dont set out on a walk outside saying, I need a piece of malachite for my money spell, and then expect to find a glossy green and black malachite on the sidewalk.
