WHY SHOULD I HIRE YOU, especially given your sketchy background and troubled employment history? While you may be more trouble that youre worth, nonetheless, Im open-minded and willing to give deserving people second chances. Do you have anything to say for yourself that would convince me that youre the best person to hire for this position?
T HATS HOW MANY progressive employers think when evaluating candidates with questionable backgrounds. So, what should the applicant do? How should he present his best self to such a skeptical employer who sees red flags and hesitates accordingly?
Lets take a hard look at what needs to be done to overcome objections to hiring people with not-so-hot backgrounds. In so doing, well learn a great deal about you and what you really want to do with your life in relationship to jobs and employers.
Youre Not Alone With Red Flags
Most people have one or two red flags in their background some minor and embarrassing, others major job killers. Many red flags are self-destructive behaviors (anger or addictions) known to only a few people; others are insidious and corrosive behaviors (an arrest or negative credit rating) quickly revealed through routine background checks. Some red flags are subtle behaviors (attitudes, habits, and decision-making styles) that savvy interviewers may uncover during multiple job interviews. And still others are physical or mental disabilities that may not be immediately obvious to others. Assuming you get to the job interview, all such red flags are potential job knockouts if not handled properly prior to getting the job offer.
Thats the subject of this book how to best handle red flags during the interview and convince employers that you are the right person for the job. The following chapters are all about how you can quickly prepare for sensitive interviews and what you should say and do when confronted with, or confessing, your red flags in face-to-face interviews.
Red flags are major impediments to building relationships and landing a job.
Lets make the case for confronting your red flags. Remember, red flags are red flags they function as major impediments to building relationships and landing a job. They shout Dont hire this one unless youre looking for trouble! Indeed, few employers want to hire someone with red flags, because they may have a negative impact on the job and workplace. While some employers are willing to give such people a second chance, other employers are reluctant to hire what they believe are risky people who may present serious liability issues for the organization.
Model Candidates Are Outliers
This book is all about dealing with red flags during the job interview how to convince an employer that you should be hired for the job despite any red flags in your background. After all, employers want to know as much as possible about the real you before they put you on their payroll. They dont want to discover your red flags after they hire you.
