Foreword
I lay in bed last night exhausted and looked at the ceiling. Then I got back out again and briefly knelt down next to my bed with my face pressed into the mattress and mumbled a prayer.
God, here I am. I dont know what Im doing.
Fourteen years into parenting and I often feel just as lost now as I did at the beginning. Our kids are toddling into middle and high school instead of just around our living room, and last night I realized, again, how vulnerable I am. How there are no guarantees and how I dont have all the answers.
Beckys book has been keeping me company the last few weeks. Literally. Its been in my computer bag, and then on my desk, and then next to my bed, and sometimes waiting for me next to a cup of lukewarm coffee. And last night her words came back to make sense of my pounding headache and the hamster wheel of doubt that was spinning in my head:
Oh, Motherhood. You are breathtakingly beautiful and heartbreakingly brutal. You are the highest honor and greatest challenge I have ever been given. One minute you make me want to weep, and the next throw my head back and dance in a whirlwind of painful, extravagant grace. Since I dont dance in public, I guess stifled weeping over my steamy latte will have to do.
Ive cried plenty the last decade plus. Ive laughed and danced too. And Ive borne witness to how fast whiny babies can grow up into sometimes even whinier teens. Last night after Id cleaned my daughters newly pierced ears and after the boys had showered and later when they were shaking out their blankets and crawling into beds, surrounded by the stuffed toys I hope they never surrender, they were little again. When they curled up their long legs and tucked their sinewy arms under their heads to sleep, I recognized them again. The familiar babies I held for hours through the shifts of nursing and burping.
I catch glimpses of those days in their growing faces.
Theyre caught in the in-between, and here I am trying to guide them, realizing Im just as in-between as they are.
