A magnificent lesson in activating human potential. Julie Genovese proves that we are far more than a body, and the heart is the greatest healer. I want everyone who seeks to grow beyond their conditions to read this book and put Julie's masterful principles into action. Here is a rare and penetrating road map to spiritual freedom.

If you have ever wondered what it must be like to have a physically different body, you will relish this compelling memoir. From the very first sentence, Julie draws readers into her extraordinary world with an immediacy that provides an intimate view of her emotional life. The lessons Julie learned that eventually brought her great joy will remain with you always. You won't be reading about her experience; you will be living it with her.

For Mom and Dad
whose unflappable love, support
and kindness
has never wavered.
This book is dedicated to you
with deepest appreciation
and all my love.
Have you learned lessons only from those who admired you, and were tender with you, and stood aside from you?
Have you not learned great lessons from those
who braced themselves against you,
and disputed passage with you?
~Walt Whitman
My name drifted down through the floorboards, as her footsteps combed the house. Thrashing against my ribcage, my heart just wanted to lift free of the day ahead.
Julie? Julie! My mom's voice was growing concerned. Where are you, sweetheart? It's almost time to go.
I'd never done anything so defiant. This'll show them, I thought. I won't come out, ever. Ever! The air felt barbed and hot, poking at my eyes and tightening my fists. I punched at the emptiness, a fury rising inside me. I don't want to go! Happiness bounced in the sweet September sky outside, yet I wouldn't relinquish a crumb of my drama below. This is horrible and unfair, I insisted, as fear jammed into my stiff joints. My breath caught when I heard a sudden rustling outside.
Jule? Are you in there?
I jumped as Ethan, my older brother, crawled into our secret hideaway under the back porch. What're you doing? he asked. Mom's looking all over for you.
I'm not going!
What do you mean? You have to go.
Do not!
Yeah, you do, he said. Dad'll be so mad if you don't come out right now.
I stared my brother down with a hate that didn't belong to him.
What? Julie? Say something. Come on cut it out.
I had no words. They had been taken away.
You can't just sit here. Now he sounded worried.
They don't care!
Who?
I couldn't admit it. Leave me alone!
Even my brother didn't understand, and he was almost eleven. I was only nine. He was smart, and he was like me. He didn't seem to mind the white-coats. He even chatted and laughed with them. How could he stand the way they looked at us and spoke about us? Didn't he feel the same curse? Why wouldn't he join my angry protest? Maybe together our misery had a chance. Maybe it had power. Didn't he hurt too?
When kids teased Ethan, he fired right back at them, angry and fierce. He would yell until they stopped in surprise, or walked away laughing. He wanted to stand up for himself, like my dad. When kids laughed at me, though, I shrank inside and dove out of the way. I wanted to avoid conflict, like my mom. Why wouldn't Ethan stand up to our parents now? Strangely enough, my brother and I never talked about it how we were different from our other brothers and sisters, how we were different from everyone at school, or about what happened to us in Boston. How could I ask him anything now?
Every hair stood at attention when we heard my dad. Julie! You come out this minute! This isn't funny anymore. Julie!
My brother stared at me in dismay and ducked out from under the back porch.
Don't go, Ethan. Why can't we be a team? Don't you dare tell them where I am, I whispered.
I watched my brother's stiff little body move quickly past the slatted grate, the only thing separating me from Boston. My crooked knees ached from sitting on the hard ground too long. Awkwardly splayed straight out in front of me, my legs refused to sit Indian-style or cross-legged, to kneel, or to slide up softly to my chest. Unwilling to be flexible and fast like the other kids. Unable to run far away.
