T oday we have so many options for social media connections. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, and many more. And any intelligent businessperson will be utilizing these to leverage their influence. But there is an underlying principle that bypasses these readily available tools. And that is the power of connecting with other people.

I started building my brand before we had podcasts, blogs, Zoom, Skype, or any of the tools mentioned above. But the door has always been wide open for creating meaningful and productive connections with other influencers.

Lets step back a few years to underscore that basic underlying principle. In September of 1988, I sold a health and fitness center at public auction. After three frustrating years, I had decided to just cash out and move on to the next idea. And yes, I thought Id cash out and be set to fund my next entrepreneurial idea. Instead, I ended that day with the stark realization that I was absolutely broke and owed over $430,000 to creditors, including the non-friendly IRS.

My education in business up to that point had come from selling Christmas cards as a kid, washing neighbors cars, and selling advertising door to door. With this enormous debt to repay, I realized I needed to learn better practicesand fast. Living in Nashville, Tennessee, I saw that there were numerous success conferences that showed up repeatedly. These conferences were promoted as a way to learn from the Masters of Achievement, by hearing their motivational speeches and getting their products.
