Whether it is your first child or your fifth, finding out that you are going to have a child will always be a time that is filled with mixed emotions of excitement, apprehension, and even a little bit of nervousness. If you are lucky enough to have the doctor tell you that you are expecting twins when he or she performs the initial examination, you will have the same feelings as everyone else, but to a much heightened extent.

If having one child is a challenging experience, the prospect of having two can be nerve-wracking.

Being a parent of twins is tiring, frustrating, and expensive and can often leave you feeling extremely lonely, but at the same time, it is a life-changing and incredibly fulfilling thing to happen that will make you feel blessed every single day as your babies grow into two completely unique people.

This book is all about how to parent twins on a day to day basis. It is not a guide to how you should bring up your children, but a set of tips about how you can get around the tricky bits of day to day life with twins. By making your life with twins easier, you can spend more time enjoying the gift of having your twins and watch them grow together and develop into individual and interesting young people.

Finding out you are pregnant with twins can be a big surprise. Although twin births do sometimes run in families, they are not that common only around 1 in thirty children are twins. Over the past few years, there has been a definite increase in the percentage of births that involve multiple babies.

In the past, fertility treatment could lead to an increased chance of having twins or more. However, improved techniques mean that this is less common these days.

Finding out that you are going to have twins can be extremely stressful. Typically, parents worry about how they will cope with having two babies to look after at the same time, not to mention the cost of twins. A single child is expensive enough, but two or more at the same time is a daunting prospect.

Once you find out that you are having twins, there are a number of things you need to do:

• Register with a local twins group
• Enquire about any tax benefits you may be eligible for
• Let employers know

Although you might feel as though it is none of your boss business if you are having twins, the fact is that not only are twin pregnancies much more tiring than single ones, the slight increase in the risk of complications means that you will see a lot more of your obstetrician than the mother of one child does. This will mean much more time away from work having scans or check ups than other parents.
