The quilts in this book, inspired by the patterns and textures of the city, are simple, graphic, and geometricglorified utility quilts, if you will. Theyre the kinds of quilts that your grandmother might have made if she had had a treasure trove of solid fabrics. Im not a fan of the saying These arent your grandmothers quilts. Some of the most amazing quilts Ive seen were made by someones grandma. Utility quilts, Amish quilts, maverick quilts, scrap quilts, quirky vintage quiltsmany are artistic treasures. Even those that missed the mark were still a labor of love.
You will find no elaborate Baltimore Album quilts in this book. Im not sure if I have what it takes to make one of those heirloom beauties that seem to take a lifetime to create. These City Quilts are meant to be kindly used up, to be loved, to be appreciated, and to be given freely. When I think of something being used to its fullest, I think of Margery Williamss childrens book
