Chapter 1 - Are You Going To Buy A New Or Used Motorhome?
O ne of the first decisions youll have to make is whether or not you want to buy a new or a used RV.
New RV
Pros:
More options in regards to floor plans and features.
New RV
Pros:
More options in regards to floor plans and features.
This is something that is going to be hard to change if you purchase a used RV. However, when youre buying a new one, you can easily choose which one you like. For example, if you want a full wall slide, youll most likely want to buy a new RV. Because you wont be able to find that in an RV that is 10-15 years old. You can custom order an RV from the manufacturer.
Cons:
More depreciation .
Cons:
More depreciation .
Your RV will lose a lot of its value once you drive it off the dealership. The first owner is almost always the one that loses the most money in depreciation. Just because youre buying a new RV, doesnt mean that you will be without problems. Sometimes, it can be beneficial to buy a used RV since the first owner will most likely have fixed all the problems by using his warranty. Your tires might not be new. Might you have heard of lot rot? Tires typically age out before they wear out.
Check the DOT date that is stamped on every tire to check the age of the tires. So for example, if you have 0306 as DOT date, it means that the tire is from the 3rd week of 2006. Thats how you read the DOT date. If youre thinking about buying a new RV, always look at the DOT date. You might be able to get a discount if the tires are old. The batteries have most likely been used.
Think of all the people that have tested the RV before you purchase it. They might also have taken it to shows, etc. Negotiate with the seller to get new in-house batteries so you can get the most out of your new RV.
Used RV
Pros:
Less expensive You can easily upgrade the tech, such as television, etc.
Cons:
You cant do a custom order. It is still possible to do changes to the RV, but you're still going to be limited.
For example, you cant move slides around, etc. The mistakes can and most likely will be more costly if the systems are old. You wont be able to use the warranty as is the case with a new RV. Personally, if I were to buy an RV right now, I would go with a used RV that has only had one owner. Preferably an RV that is around 1-4 years old. This will save me from the depreciation, and Ill still get a high-quality RV.
I recommend that you look up rvtrader.com if you want a great resource for finding both new and used RVs.
