G reat ideas come a dime a dozen. Its effective planning, execution, and the willingness to fail that sets successful people apart from mere idea generators. For as long as I can remember Ive told people that success is pretty much determined by the obstacles you overcome in life, not by the positions or the titles that you hold. Its refreshing to see that a millennial has grasped this concept and is willing to share it with her counterparts and the rest of the world.

When I first met Angel, she had recently launched her business, DC Media Connection, based in Washington, DC. She was on business travel in Atlanta, Georgia, where she was attending the HOPE Global Forums to connect with global business leaders. From a glance, you could tell that she was serious about her business. However, it was her ability to understand the needs of others that was the most appealing quality that I grasped, immediately.

As a business owner, its imperative that you understand that your work isnt about you; its about the lives that you impact. Its your job to determine how your product or service makes the lives of others better.

At a young age, I learned that in order for me to win the support of my community, I had to show up for my community. This proved to be true throughout my time as the associate director of the Georgia Democratic Party and even more so when I was named the first African-American State Director under U.S. Senator Sam Nunn. When I accepted the position as National Chairman of 100 Black Men of America, it was yet another step towards creating impact while connecting to the most important capital you can havepeople.

In business you will rely on people to push your initiative or movement forward. Whether its through your interior support team (i.e., your mentors, coaches, et cetera) or your forward-facing team (i.e., staff, volunteers, et cetera) you will need to understand what your vision is, before you can expect anyone else to assist you. As the chief executive officer of six different businessesTWD, Inc., a private sector consulting firm; FAD Consulting, LLC, a public sector consulting firm that works closely with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, U.S. Department of Transportation, and the U.S. Department of Energy; Atlanta Transportation Systems Inc., a non-emergency para-transit system; Better Dreams Mattress Manufacturing Company; Southwest Investment Group; and LANCOR Parking Inc.I understand the importance of creating business processes, structures and projection planning.

Congratulations on taking the first step towards gaining the core elements to transition successfully into full-time business ownership. T here are people who are placed in our lives for a purpose and others we merely choose to allow on our journey. I believe that my line sister, from the illustrious Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, was orchestrated to be in my life. She grew up as an only child in Saudi Arabia; however, today she calls Virginia home. Its the place that she and her husband, a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, decided to raise their two amazing kids. She works hard and continues to strive for excellence as she climbs the corporate ladder. At the end of the day, her job pays the bills and allows her to live a successful life. Not just in the traditional sense, either. Shes a stellar mom, supportive wife, compassionate daughter, and an amazing friend. Yet somehow she still manages to feel as if something is missing.
