What is a Time Millionaire?
Every Friday morning around 9:30 a.m. I take my sweet time relaxing in the sauna and steam room, and then I hit the pool for some laps. At this point in the day, the morning rush is gone and I am sharing lanes with the 65+ crowd. Just me and the retirees. The way I like it.
As a Time Millionaire, in many ways I live my life in contrast to the majority. I grocery shop at 10am on Tuesdays and dont have to fight my way through crowded aisles. I take long vacations in May and dont have to pay peak travel prices. I love Mondays, because a Monday is no different than a Friday in my world. James and I leave for weekend getaways on Wednesdays, putting us the opposite direction of traffic. A true commodity in the Seattle-area.
A Time Millionaire has the final say in how they spend the 24 hours they are gifted with each and every day. A Time Millionaire is not limited by the 9-5 dictated by most corporations. A Time Millionaire does not have to ask permission to miss a workday and is not allotted a set amount of vacation time. A Time Millionaire is wealthy with options regarding what they do and who they spend time with. A Time Millionaire is living a freedom-based lifestyle.
There are several terms I will use throughout this book that I want to clearly define for you:
FREEDOM-BASED LIFESTYLE: Living a freedom-based lifestyle means you have the ability to determine the course of your daily schedule and overall life direction. You dont have a boss, and you can never get fired. Your success (however you define it) is completely dependent on your own effort and timeline. You are granted creative independence and the option to choose when you want to work on your business, and when you want to block off your schedule for family time. Essentially, you get to wake up every day and choose your own adventure.
RESIDUAL INCOME: Also commonly called passive income, residual income is when you continue to get paid after the work is done. The key idea here is leverage. Leveraging other peoples time or other peoples money creates a residual income. Residual income allows you to make money while youre on vacation, while youre spending quality time with your family, and even while youre sleeping.
DIRECT SALES: Direct selling is a retail channel in which independent distributors market and sell products directly to the consumer without the need for a physical storefront, thus breaking away from the costly, generic retail tradition. Direct selling consultants work on their own, but affiliate with a company that uses this channel, retaining the freedom to run a business on their own terms. I will also refer to this business model as network marketing and multi-level marketing (MLM).
SIDE HUSTLE: A side hustle is a way to earn extra Plan B income that allows flexibility to pay off debt and/or enrich your lifestyle. It can also be your opportunity to delve into whatever you are most passionate about without quitting your full-time job.
Introduction
The Skinny Dip
One morning during my travels in one of the more rural corners of the world, I awoke to the neighborhood rooster cock-a-doodle-dooing. I could hear birds singing sweet chirps and dogs barking in the distance, but beyond that, only silence. Sweet Jamesy was happily dozing to the right of me, his lips curled up into a smile. Typical. I kissed his forehead and basked in his peacefulness. Eventually, I escaped the grasp of the white, fluffy covers, walked up to the double-pane window, and thrust open the shutters. A bright October day welcomed me. Deep breath in... ahhhh. The unparalleled aroma of bougainvillea and salty ocean consumed my every fiber.
I walked down the stairs and out to the back porch of the modern-rustic villa where I was greeted by Niko Suave, our orangey adopted stray cat for the week. He rubbed my ankles almost as if he could guess the meaning of this day. Or he could sense the cat food on the kitchen counter. I patted his head, stripped down to my birthday suit, and jumped into the infinity pool overlooking the Ionian Sea.
Turning 30 never felt so good.
***
It had always been my goal to be a millionaire by the age of 30. Being a millionaire represented freedom. Freedom to give, save, invest, and bless. Freedom to live where I wanted, eat what I wanted, and go where I wanted. Freedom from arguing with my spouse, friends, and family about money. Freedom to start businesses; businesses that would add significance to the world. Freedom to experience the fullness of life.
As I folded my arms and leaned against the edge of the pool to gawk at the sweeping cliffside view in all of my natural glory, I reflected on the incredible fulfilled dreams that lead me to this exact beautiful moment. Even though I wasnt yet a millionaire, what I had was more precious than diamonds: TIME. I was a Time Millionaire. I was debt-free after paying off $95,000 in business loans and back taxes. I no longer had to work as a personal trainer because I had partnered with a direct sales company and replaced my income by building a true business. And now, with Sweet Jamesy by my side, I was traveling around the world; sixteen countries and five continents over eight months for #GarnersGoGlobal. We were actually living the Four Hour Work Week, something we had been talking about since our very first date on a hot summers night under a towering madrona tree.
Tired hair stylists, retail workers, and salespeople, I see you. Overwhelmed lawyers, trainers, servers, and teachers, I feel you. Entrepreneur hopefuls and those who want to change the world, I hear you crying out for time to be with your family; time to pour yourself into your passions and hobbies; time to travel, to create, to connect, to sleep soundly, and to enjoy all that is sweet in life.
The common belief is that you have to choose between money and time, but Im here to tell you: you can absolutely have both.
Defining Moment
Im going into labor!
My heart dropped to the depths of my chest. I was going to miss it. Worse, I was choosing to miss it. It was a Saturday morning, and I was booked with clients back-to-back. Five sessions, to be exact, representing $325 of income. I was barely hanging on financially, and I needed that money for rent. However, my sister wanted me by her side when she was giving birth to my niece down in Vancouver, about three hours south of Seattle. She had told me a week prior how much it would mean to her. I felt trapped. Even though I was running a personal training business and could have easily rescheduled with little backlash, I had no other way to make up that $325. I had to stay.
I stayed, and I missed out on an irreplaceable memory. That was a defining moment for me because it forced me to take a hard look at reality: I didnt actually own a business. My business owned me. If I didnt work, I didnt get paid. If clients were sick, I didnt get paid. If clients went on vacation, I didnt get paid. If I went on vacation, I didnt get paid, and I had to pay for the vacation. So I didnt ever go on vacation... and I like vacations!
