Introduction
I t seems like you cant avoid them anymore. Businesses popping up in city centers with names filled with Escape, Puzzle, Real and Key, with varying accessory nouns.
What are they? Where did they come from? Why are there so many?
After reading this, youll learn the answers to some of these questions, but you may leave with more. Hopefully, youll be so intrigued youll search out one of these companies!
Escape room games go by many names, not such business titles. Exit games, real life escape rooms, escape experiences, real life adventure games, puzzle rooms, and so much more. Each company describes themselves differently, but here are some of the most common facts.
- You and your group,
- Put in a room,
- Find and solve puzzles,
- Try to escape,
- Within a given timeframe.
Online Escape The Room Games
T he worldwide web has been extremely welcoming of the escape the room industry. Apps and online games have been around for years, far longer than their real-life counterparts. They can be incredibly detailed and elaborate, take hours to complete, not to mention being highly addictive.
A simple search for escape room games brings up dozens, if not hundreds, of websites just ripe for playing. As a sub-genre of adventure games and puzzle games, these games attract a wide audience. Solving the games can involve simple actions such as clicking on the correct image inside the game, to following a long path and turning in the correct direction after 30 turns.
The apps and games are typical Flash games, where a click allows a player to pick something up, or flick a button, or move something. They can range in difficulty and theme, and may be simple puzzles or may require the use of logic skills to figure out the escape route.
These games are great for children as well as adults. While real life escape rooms are typically targeted at adults, the apps and online games are extremely interesting for children and young kids.
For apps, they are often best configured for tablets, as the wide screens and better viewing lends itself well to the intricate games. One of the most favorite, The Room, comes highly recommended and an excellent introduction to the escape games field. Visit the iOS App Store, or the Google Play store to find an app and get started on escaping!
Hint: The Room is described on the Google Play store: Welcome to The Room, a physical puzzler, wrapped in a mystery game, inside a beautifully tactile 3D world.

5 Ways To Beat An Escape Room Game
1. Experience!
T he more games you play, the better you will be! The first game you play, dont expect to get out on time. As you play more games, and try out a variety of themes and styles, you will start to learn about how to look for clues and where to find them.
You will understand the varieties of locks that are out there; reducing the time you spend just figuring out how to enter the answer into the lock. Youll learn about word-number puzzles, and what parts of the room are made to move and which are not.
2. Team Members
C hoose your teammates wisely. You want to have a good mix of leaders and followers, those who prefer different types of puzzles, and people who are okay with yelling at each other!
A lot of your success at an escape room game will come down to who is in the room with you. If you can interact with each other in high stress conditions, you should be fine.
We definitely dont recommend escape games for dates, particularly first dates.
3. Teamwork
A long those lines, you need to work with your team members to succeed. If you are stuck on a puzzle and simply cant figure it out, switch places with a group member. Fresh eyes are always important.
Dont be afraid to have someone try the lock once again. Comments of, Oh I tried that already dont really work in escape rooms. Let someone else try as well! It might just make the difference.
4. Look Everywhere!
U nder the carpet, under the chair seats, behind the desk, turn on the lamp and turn it off, look at the ceiling, and pull back the curtains.
Clues and puzzles are found everywhere, and game masters will try to hide things from players. Scavenging is a large portion of escape games, and sometimes the first step of a puzzle is simply finding the parts.
5. Listen to the Instructions Given
E very game master provides a set of rules and/or instructions before players begin. These may be given in the form of a paper you need to read, a speech from a game master, or a video to watch.
Pay attention! These rules are important for a reason, and they may even give you some guidance on types of locks found inside the space. Unusual locks can trip people up, so if you hear the game master mention something then listen!
Choosing a Game Theme
Historic
T he most common escape game with a historical theme is Egyptian. Theyre everywhere.
- Egyptian tombs/pyramids
- Local history story
- Cold war spy drama
Futuristic
T hese situations are outlandish, and present atmospheres and situations that are not realistic for the average person.
- Trapped on an alien spaceship!
- Find and complete the magical altar to escape the tomb
Defeating the Enemy
Y ou must escape the serial killers lair, or find the spy and escape their clutches. You may also find yourself incarcerated and having to escape a jail cell. Not necessarily defeating an enemy, but you often have to figure out who should have been arrested instead of yourself.
Adventure not Escape
N ot every game is about escaping, many instead have you trying to accomplish something or achieve a goal.
