Were the Moorfields Manual alive it would be celebrating its 11thbirthday. Eleven is an in-between age, when one starts to sense thepassing of childhood, aware that the approaching teenage years aresomehow different. Life will change.

There is now almost limitless clinical information availableonline. So why bother with a book? Is it just the authors plaything?Maybe. But then the aim of this book is not to add to the informationout there, but rather to distil clinical evidence, experience andtechniques into a useable format.

When I imagine someone opening this book, it is most often astressed junior ophthalmologist or optician, with a queue of patientswaiting to be seen. Not for lack of curiosity, but she is not, at thisparticular moment, interested in the pathophysiology of recurrentcorneal erosion syndrome. Rather, she wants to know how, precisely,to manage Mr Smiths spontaneous corneal defect; which eye drops, how often, for how long, and when to see him again?

As time passes, I hope that this book remains useful to both you,and Mr Smith.
