Introduction

Its that time of year again. Christmas looms and youre bombarded by advertising and Christmas carols, all of which suggest that youre facing the happiest, most fun-filled time of the year. Its that magical day when children smile, when Santa chuckles and when loved ones stare romantically into each others eyes as they swap gifts of great beauty and no little value. Its the time of year for giving and loving and, regardless of ones religion, its truly the time for peace on earth for everyone.

But you know the grim reality.

Christmas can be a financial, logistical and emotional minefield. Youve presents to buy and wrap, food to prepare, relatives to appease and people to visit. If youre anything like 95% of people youll wish it would all go away, that Santa would simply wave his magic wand (OK, we accept that Santa isnt usually associated with a magic wand but well thank you not to be too literal) and make it all disappear, the tinsel, the terrible Christmas hit songs, the overeating and the tired, screaming children.

But it doesnt have to be this way. The boys and girls at Infinite Ideas love Christmas. We find it peaceful, relaxing and inspiring. We dont get stressed at all. We dont have to drink a bucket of Claret each day simply to get through it. Why? Well, because weve access to some great advice from our team of expert authors.

So thats what were offering in this short eBook; brilliant, simple advice, not only about getting through the festive season, but also how to enjoy it in a relaxed and healthy manner. We wont try to teach you how to cook your turkey or how to make a great Christmas cake; you can get that from a myriad of recipe websites and cook books. No, our aim is simple. Our practical advice will help you get the most out of this special holiday.

So, Happy Christmas, and we really mean it!

The Infinite Ideas team

9. A perfect Christmas

Its a big event is Christmas. Its a time for family, for giving, for entertaining, for having fun and you quite rightly want it to be perfect.

Part of the problem is that perfection is all around. You see it on TV programmes and in magazines. The perfect table, the perfect gift wrap, the perfect decorations and thats what you aspire to.

No-one cares if youre perfect except for you so ration your perfectionism. Real life isnt lived from the pages of a magazine. Do your best of course to create a wonderful Christmas but remember, you cant do or make everything. So be prepared to compromise on some things. You may have to buy some decorations rather than create them by hand from what you find in the forest. It may just be more practical to buy in some food rather than make it yourself.

Top festive tip. Set yourself reasonable goals and stick to them. Aiming for perfection is a guaranteed way to increase stress and disappointment.

10. Pay back time

Christmas stress can be caused by a myriad of issues, from worrying about undercooking the goose to what to buy for the mother-in-law. Such stress is unavoidable, but you can learn to live with it.

What can be difficult to live with is when the stress is caused by your own actions. So, if you really dont want a member of your husbands family to join you on Christmas Day because of her poor personal hygiene, drunkenness and constant swearing in front of the kids, dont invite her. If your budget realistically only stretches to Norwegian Cava but you buy Grand Cru champagne, then accept responsibility and dont beat yourself up about the credit card bill later.

Top festive tip. A lot of stress is caused because of choices you make. Be brave; dont be forced into situations youre not comfortable with this Christmas.

11. Christmas hell is other people

Try this exercise. Think of everyone you regularly come into contact with then divide that list into the following:

Energisers - people who bring joy to your life, who make you feel good and confident about yourself;

Neutrals - people who you get on with fine but who dont bring much to you either good or bad;

Drainers - people who irritate you, who score points off you, who make you feel inadequate because of what theyve got, what theyve done, how they look or where theyve been.

You know whats coming dont you? Try to maximise your exposure to Energisers at this stressful time of year - theyll support you, praise you and make you feel good. Neutrals - well, theyre neither here nor there. But Drainers have to be avoided at all cost. Theyll express surprise when you tell them youve not knitted your own nativity scene for the kids and arent serving Chateau Lafitte at the festive table.

Top festive tip. You need positive reinforcement at this time of year so make sure you get it from the people around you!

12. Thanks for the memory

Theres a lot to do at this time of year, of course. Youll find yourself juggling your time to ensure the festive table looks great, the meal is fabulous, the decorations are tasteful (please tell us you do tasteful decorations?) and the presents are what everyone wants. Thats a lot to remember.

Of course, we all have our own techniques for managing the tasks that urgently need to be done. But you might consider a natural memory boost such as taking a supplement. Supplements are for life, not just Christmas. Try gingko biloba for example as theres evidence to suggest that it improves blood flow to the brain and hence ones memory. Supplements with sage seem to work too.

Top festive tip. Nourish your brain at this time of year, and dont forget your body too! Natural supplements can help you overcome the stress of having a million and one things to do.

13. Peace, love and understanding

You need to understand what is happening to your body when you are feeling stressed and that actually the release of the hormone dehydroepiandrosterone, (also known as DHEA) can be good for you. So, rejoice just a little in your stress and dont try to smother it with alcohol and cigarettes.

Ok, so thats easier said than done we hear you cry. Christmas is a time of over indulgence, a couple of glasses of Welsh Merlot too many and a few (usually forbidden) cigarettes because thatll help you get through the stress. Wrong! Tobacco and alcohol actually act as depressants, so all they do is to suppress your stress. That may (we stress the word may ) be OK when youre younger as the body may be able to cope, but as you age you may be storing up a whole heap of stress-related problems for yourself. Were not advocating a life of lettuce and mineral water - enjoy your indulgences, of course, but enjoy them sensibly.

Top festive tip. Dont be tempted to deal with stress through drink and cigarettes. Much better to de-stress by relaxation or activity, either mental or physical. Going for a walk or a jog, or reading a book for an hour or so will be much more beneficial to you than hitting the JD and Marlboro Lites.

14. The great outdoors

The Christmas period is for many people spent indoors eating, drinking and watching the television. That can in itself cause some degree of claustrophobia for everyone. If there are kids in the house the tension usually builds as they become tired and fractious.

Our advice to you is this: get out of the house either on Christmas Day or the following day, and make it FUN. Make sure the children have had a couple of presents from Santa that can only be used out of doors such as a kite or a sledge. Buy them a winter hat, scarf and gloves, or boots, so that they are excited about going out into the fresh air in their new clothes.

Just an hours walk will blow away the cobwebs regardless of the weather (use your common sense though, dont go out in blizzards or hurricanes) and the fresh air will tire out the young ones much more effectively than four hours on the X Box.
