HEALING PRODUCTS OF NATURE
INTRODUCTION
Let me start by saying that I have the utmost respect for all physicians and surgeons. Just about everyone has to acknowledge traditional physicians for all their medical knowledge and years of training in the study and science of the human body.
If you look around you will see a trend thats been going on for a while now. That is people are becoming more conscious of their physical well-being, meaning they are exercising more, dieting and generally watching what they consume daily. Concerning their medical needs, many are starting to question what exactly are in prescription drugs and why are there so many possible side effects. For these reasons and more, many people are looking for, and finding, there is a natural alternate that does not compromise the bodys ability to fight infection and illness in any way.
This book is about Naturopathic doctors - their background, philosophy and training as well as treatments and remedies for common illnesses. Naturopathic Doctors have much the same training as traditional doctors plus have extensive training in drug/herb interactions, herbal medicine, physical medicine and clinical nutrition and more. Just as there traditional counterparts they use many of the same procedures like lab testing, allergy testing, imaging and physical exams. A lot of people have heard about Holistic Medicine and Naturopathic Doctors and many are already consulting them and getting positive results. After all, Holistic Medicine has been around for thousands of years, starting out in India and China.
I mentioned Holistic Medicine because it is interlinked to Naturopathic Doctors in a very basic way and the best way to define it comes from the American Holistic Medicine Association:
Holistic medicine is the art and science of healing that addresses care of the whole person-body, mind, and spirit. The practice of holistic medicine integrates conventional and complementary therapies to promote optimal health, and prevent and treat disease by addressing contributing factors.
If you read this far I can assume you are at least a little curious or maybe seriously considering changing to a Naturopathic Doctor for your medical (and spiritual) needs. This shows you have an open mind and can consider another path that will put your body in proper alignment naturally.
Thanks for reading, Roger P.
CHAPTER 1.
THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND THE PRACTICE
Naturopaths prominently believe in the Healing Power of Nature. The philosophy usually revolves around a system of primary health care that distinguishes it from current mainstream or orthodox medical practice. They believe that nature has an inherent ability to establish, maintain, and restore health. Naturopaths believe in the philosophy of treatment by recognizing and removing barriers to the healing process by following these principles:
First - Do No Harm:
The Naturopathic Physician practices methods and medicines that use the least force necessary for diagnosing and treating an illness. These are:
- Identifying the underlying cause of illness which may be due to diet, lifestyle habits, life events, posture or environment, and then removing it using natural healing methods.
- Using low-risk treatments such as nutritional supplements and herbal extracts, and minimizing the risk of harmful side-effects.
- Avoiding the harmful suppression or elimination of symptoms and work with the individuals self-healing abilities. Symptoms are often viewed as expressions of the bodys natural attempt to heal.
- Using natural, safe and effective remedies and therapies.
Treat the Whole (holism) Person:
Naturopathic Physicians believe that to expedite healing, it is important to approach all factors that can impact the individuals health. They start by taking into account an individuals nutritional habits; physical health; lifestyle; emotional and mental health; and social and environmental factors. Therefore, a person is evaluated and addressed on all levels which are affecting the entire individual, and not only a specific organ or illness.
Naturopaths work with the self-healing power of nature that is inherent in each individual human being. They act to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery, and to improvise and increase this inherent self-healing process. This method helps a patient to move from a diseased (imbalanced) state to a healthy (balanced) state.
Physician as a Teacher:
Naturopathic Physicians take into account the importance of educating their patient and empowering each individual to take the responsibility of their own health. The goal is to provide an understanding of the factors that affects the health and help them become more capable of maintaining their own health. This enables the individuals to make informed choices that will benefit their health and well-being.
Disease Prevention and Healthy Living:
Naturopathic Physicians encourages and educates each patient in the prevention of disease. They promote a custom tailored lifestyle for each individual that is supportive in helping the person stay healthy on all levels by obtaining proper nutrition; daily exercise; a balanced lifestyle; and positive emotional well-being.
CHAPTER 2.
THREE TYPES OF NATUROPATHIC PHYSICIANS
Naturopathic Doctor (ND) needs four years of accredited training in following areas in addition to standard medical curriculum:
- Clinical nutrition
- Acupuncture
- Homeopathic medicine
- Botanical medicine
- Psychology and Counseling
The second type is usually referred as just Naturopaths or Traditional Naturopaths and differ in that they have not have received accredited training but use the same natural treatments as accredited Naturopathic doctors. Often these doctors work with traditional medical doctors to supplement patients needs and usually belong to an organization and oversees naturopathic practices. They may focus on one or a few naturopathic methods.
