This engaging, eye-opening book covers everything anyone would ever want to know about social media influencers. Booklist, Starred ReviewUnpacks and pulls the curtain back on what happens to our brains and our behaviors each time we addictively engage social media and the influencers we encounter there.Individuals seeking to widen their tribes of friends, fans, and followers have an abundance of resources for building their digital footprints and social media popularity. All of this seems well and good from the perspective of revenue, exposure, and perhaps ego-building, but what is the impact of this on the human brain and our behavior? Is anyone paying attention to the lurking side effects of the social media influencer revolution? As Dr. Brian Boxer Wachlerone of the worlds most esteemed authorities on human perceptionreveals in Influenced: The Impact of Social Media on Our Perception, we are oblivious to the mental evolution that is already in process. Science is proving that our addictive reliance upon social media and its influencers is having a demonstrable impact on how we think, feel, and perceive everything around us and even how we react to stimuli. One might think that a Like is nothing more than a split-second tap on a device. However, brain scans tell a different story. Our brains literally light up with every buzz, ding, alert, and ring in anticipation of how our network is responding to us. As we tap away at our devices, we anxiously seek the approval of othersoften people we dont know.Influenced unpacks what happens to our brains and our behaviors each time we click Like; follow an influencer; consume a video; share or reshare an article; post or repost a photograph; write a comment; pile on a trend;; just scroll for new content; and why do we keep coming back for more. Dr. Boxer Wachler includes his own social and medical findings and highlights them with interviews with top influencers, the latest studies, and pop-culture anecdotes.

To my cherished reader: you took a chance by picking up this book, which covers a topic that touches virtually everyones life. I know you had many purchasing options, so I offer my appreciation for having selected Influenced.

Ill let you in on a little secret about authors: largely, we write for younot for ourselves. To move you. To inspire you. To entertain you. My hope is that, within these pages, youll discover many insights that will have you shouting aloud, Wow! I didnt know that! Thats amazing! Im going to use this pearl! or some other similar comment.

There are many caring and talented people who help shape and shepherd a professional book, which starts out as just a rough idea. My agent, Gordon Warnock at Fuse Literary, is the key person who has been with me from the start of my career as an author.

Gordonyou saw something in me that I didnt know I possessed. You have offered more than your time and skills as an agent; youve invested so much of yourself to help this book realize its full potential. I know that took countless additional hours of your time and focus that could have been spent on your other responsibilities. I am eternally grateful for your limitless talent, astute guidance, loyal advocacy, and genuine care for this project. I am honored that you remain an important part of my life. I cannot express all the gratitude I have for you as my gifted agent and dear friend.

Thank you, Suzanne Staszak-Silva at Rowman & Littlefieldmy publisher. I am deeply appreciative that you championed this book from Gordons first pitch. I am grateful for all the time you invested, along with Patricia Stevenson and Deni Remsberg, reading and editing the manuscript to tighten it up and using 300-grit sandpaper to provide polish. I am honored that your skilled creative team helped deliver this book to the world. I appreciate you, April Austin, for making sure I didnt leave any undotted is or bare ts lying about.

To Gary M. Krebs, my writing consultant. Gary, you were instrumental in helping mold my vision for this book into what it now is. You were never afraid to get too close to the smoldering kilnat risk of burning your handsto ensure that this book took proper shape. Thank you for your hard work and diligence working with me as I exploded out of the starting gate; settled in with perfect pacing after what seemed like countless laps; and, finally, sprinted in the last one hundred meters to cross the finish linetank emptied. Thank you again for being an incredibly valuable member of the team and for being a friend.

To my friends, my fellow influencers, you were all so generous with your precious time as I interviewed you for this book: thank you. You added a profound layer of depth, insight, understanding, and nuance through your unfiltered, firsthand experiences in the influencer universe. I recognize that you placed a high level of trust in me by sharing your vast experiences, private stories, and epiphanic insights. I value this trust and promise to never take it for granted. In some ways, I think of this book as being like Anthony Bourdains
