A Marine Base

Welcome to Camp Lejeune

(Leh JOON)! Its one of the

largest military bases in the

country.

Marines live, work,

shop, and go to

school on the base.

More than 157,000 people

live and work at this base!

You need an ID card to

visit a base. A person checks

the card at the front gate.

ID cards are used to identify

Marines and their families.

Without an ID card, you cant

use base shops, child care,

and health care.

A Marine base has shops,

banks, and places to eat.

The commissary is a market

where Marines buy food. The

Post Exchange (PX) is like the

malls in most towns. Marines

can buy clothing there.

Marines and Their Families

Some Marines live on base

with their families. The base

even has parks where kids

can play!

Camp Lejeune has schools

for children who live on base.

Marines at Work

New Marines live in

buildings called barracks

(BAR-uhks). Barracks are

filled with bunk beds. Many

Marines sleep in barracks.

Marines keep their

things in a box called a

footlocker . They keep it

on the floor at the foot of

their beds.

Marines work hard. They

do many different jobs.

Before the Internet and

television, the Marine

Corps used posters to

recruit new Marines.

Some Marines are pilots.

Near Camp Lejeune, pilots fly

in a special aircraft called an

Osprey (AH spray).

An Osprey can take

off like a helicopter

but fly like a plane.
