Acknowledgments
The process of writing a book is both personal and collaborative. Many individuals contributed to the building of this series, bit by bit, page by page, experience by experience. I want to start with a deeply felt thank you to our chapter authors. Each one of them juggles multiple responsibilities, and I value and appreciate the time and effort each has invested in reflecting on, wrestling with, and defining the new literacies.
In two memorable conversationsone in Melbourne, Australia, and one in San FranciscoDouglas Rife, president of Solution Tree Press, prompted me to consider creating the four-book series Contemporary Perspectives on Literacy. I am grateful for the personal encouragement and coaching he has provided while concurrently displaying remarkable patience. Outside reviewers, under the direction of Solution Tree Press, gave us solid and incisive feedback on our first drafts that helped our authors rework and craft their text. The editorial staff at Solution Tree Press are of the highest quality, and we continue to appreciate their direction.
Countless numbers of teachers and administrators from around the world work diligently to bring the best to their students every day, and they have provided inspiration for our work at the Curriculum 21 Project. The faculty at Curriculum 21 has been supporting educators since 2003, and this support has been unflaggingly expansive.
In particular, I want to give a round of applause to Elisa Black and Kathy Scoli for their outstanding and meticulous editorial work preparing chapters for review. Justin Fleisher and Michele Griffin were extremely helpful in assisting me with the research for Curriculum and Canon. Earl Nicholas proved to be a constant anchor and creative soundboard in projects related to merging curriculum and technology.
With constant support and humor, my husband, Jeffrey, is always there for me when I take the plunge into a new project idea. As always, our adult children, Rebecca and Matt, are my ultimate inspiration.

In Memory
The Contemporary Perspectives on Literacy series is dedicated to Jane Bullowa, former assistant superintendent for instructional services at the Ulster Board of Cooperative Educational Services in upstate New York, where she worked for thirty-seven years. It has been my experience that regional service center leaders are among the most talented and forward-thinking educators in the United States. In that tradition, Jane was relentlessly progressive yet had the easiest style. She encouraged innovation and provided educators with opportunities to try out new approaches. In particular, she prompted me to engage in the integration of emerging technologies from the onset of the first CD-ROMs to Netscape Navigator as a browser. I vividly remember the day she introduced me to my first videoconference on a Polycom, and I could see the world expanding in our classrooms. Jane opened learning portals for thousands of students, teachers, and administrators. Thank you, Jane.
