Homemade Shampoo Tips
Do not expect these shampoos to produce lather like store bought ones. Most, if not all contain lathering agents, surfactants like sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate. We have become used to the idea that suds equal clean but that isnt true. While your homemade shampoo may not produce a head full of lather, it will clean, moisturize and protect than its lathering counterpart.
Homemade shampoos are natural products and thus dont have an indefinite shelf or stated shelf life. Just like foods without preservatives, their shelf life is shorter than commercial products. They can last for almost a year if properly stored in airtight glass containers. You can store them in mason jars with lids and then keep the one you want to use right away in a dispensing bottle. Keep shampoos in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. If all these conditions fail, discard after 6 months.
They do not contain thickening agents. These shampoos are usually thin and watery so you have to dispense slowly from the bottle.
You must take precautions when using homemade shampoos because some may contain herbs and essential oils. There is a possibility of an allergy or adverse effect occurring. Please do not use if you have any abnormal reaction to any herb. Always seek medical counsel before using or plan to become pregnant, nursing or have any medical condition.
Lastly and most importantly, you need to know that all shampoos are somewhat alkaline. Castile soap is very alkaline, with pH range of 9 to 10. The hair has a slightly acidic Ph level and it is this acid that gives the hair its protective barrier. To restore hair to its naturally acidic pH state, it is highly recommended you do an apple cider vinegar rinse after washing with shampoo since the hair and vinegar share similar pH level. It helps to remove any residue and sticky build up that causes the hair to look dull. It will also add life and shine to your hair.
