Essential oils are pure and unadulterated extracts of plants. These oils are derived from the flowers, leaves, stems, barks, roots and other parts of plants.
They can also be obtained from fruits, seeds and peels. The source is endless. Any part of plants or fruits considered beneficial to the human body and can be used for other purposes can be used to produced essential oils.
These oils have numerous benefits for the body; they include:
- Therapeutic (relaxing & soothing)
- Aromatic
- Invigorating
- Moisturizing & conditioning
- Cleaning & grooming
- Combating infections and killing germs
- Supporting system organs and promoting healthy skin, hair & body
- Detoxification to mention a few.
Essential oils are highly volatile, meaning they evaporate easily when left in open air. They give off strong scents and it is advised to not inhale oils directly from bottle.
All essential oils are not therapuetic; we have lower grade ones that can be used to flavor foods or for some other purposes.
Essential oils are adaptogenic , meaning they are versatile in functions.
The ancient Egyptians were the first to discover the use of plants for therapeutic purposes, infusing plants into oils to produce perfumed oils. This was also done by the Greeks and Romans as well.
The unearthing of modern day essential oils for use was first recorded in the 1920s by a French Chemist, Dr Maurice Gattefosse who burned hs hands and treated it effectively with lavender oil.
The word aromatherapy was coined by him.

Essential Oils Tips
- Never buy oils in clear bottles. Essential oils are highly volatile, thus it is best to buy the ones in dark bottles to avoid body harm.
- Do not store essential oils in bottles with rubber dropper as oil can react with the rubber. If you want to use a dropper bottle to store essential oil, make sure the oil has been adequately diluted with light or carrier oils.
- Apply diluted essential oil in small amounts to skin. Do not apply to eyes, nostrils, lips and inner ears; this is to avoid damage.
- Avoid putting the bottle directly to your nose in odor to perceive the oils. This is dangerous because essential oils are usually concentrated and doing this will send the odor straight to your brain as they are sharp and concentrated.
- Follow safety precautions printed on bottle label of essential oils to avoid disaster.
- Avoid essential ones that irritate the skin. Before deciding to use essential oil on the skin, do a patch test to ascertain if your skin is sensitive to the oil or not.
