Acknowledgments
W hile it may be my name on the cover, this book was a collaborative effort. The entire Ovation Communication team support was palpable during the process, and I will be forever grateful. This would not have been possible without the time, talent, humor, and energy of Richard Arseneault, Nick Verina, Tom Frey, and especially Bridget Beirne. Thank you to John Woods of CWL Publishing for trusting me with this project. It has been a joy and a fantastic learning experience. Many thanks to the calming influence of Eric Bergeron, whose belief in me and Ovation Communication has never faltered. Dedicated to Sydney Fayelook, Mama wrote a book!
Introduction
I m standing in the wings of my high school theater (The Baltimore School for the Arts)a ballroom that once was part of an old hotel in Maryland. The stage looks like black ice, and Im afraid Im going to slip. I hear the audience talking (its a packed house). My castmates are fussing around me. Men are wearing puffy pirate shirts, and women with nearly identical flowing, curly hair are wearing long black skirts. I hear the orchestra warming up and the tap, tap, tap of the conductors baton on his music stand. The overture is about to begin.
