FOREWORD
Longevity. Ageless beauty. Immortality. These words identify one of humanitys greatest aspirations. Ponce de Leons alleged quest for the Fountain of Youth, Alexander the Greats legendary search for a river to remedy senescence, and cross-cultural spiritual aspirations for eternal lifeall testify to this enduring human pursuit. Turn back the clock on aging. Live longer and better.
In my three decades as a physician, Ive seen these aspirations played out in the lives of my patients, students, and public audiences throughout the world. Indeed, the quest for longevity and high-quality living knows no cultural or geographic boundaries.
Well, with such a pervasive vision, how are we doing?
We have made strides in extending the productive life span. As the numbers of octogenarians and nonagenarians swell, its obvious weve done at least a few things right. On the other hand, the epidemic of dementia and the surging rates of other chronic conditions like diabetes and obesity remind us that were still missing many pieces in the optimal longevity puzzle.
Over the years, my work as a board-certified physician in both Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine has provided a unique vantage point for surveying practical aspects of the longevity question. Most remarkable has been my clinical experience with intensive lifestyle change programs.
Working with patients in residential health enhancement programs like those offered at Northern Californias Weimar Institute Ive seen remarkable evidence that disease and aging processes can, in many cases, be rapidly reversed. Within two or three weeks, patients with heart disease can often successfully eliminate angina, regain long-lost vigor, and slash their medication bills. In similar short order, individuals with type 2 diabetes or hypertension typically improve blood sugar and blood pressure readings, enhance their well-being, and turn back the clock on their complicationswhile they too decrease their reliance on prescription drugs. Individuals in the throes of autoimmune diseases like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis can, without adding new medications, sometimes rapidly halteven reversethe progression of their conditions. And thats just a sampling of many of the astounding stories that have taken place on the campuses of two institutions that have stood the test of time. (Weimars NEWSTART program has been operating for more than thirty-five years, and Wildwood has been offering lifestyle-based healing approaches for seventy-five years.)
Although lifestyle approaches are not panaceas, the range of diseases Ive seen respond to simple non-drug approaches has convinced me that weve largely overlooked one of the most powerful keys for turning back the clock on disease, poor quality of life, and aging in general. In medical parlance, that key is called optimizing hemorheology. In lay terms, were talking about enhancing your blood fluiditya unifying medical concept that responds very quickly to simple lifestyle strategies.
When I speak before lay audiences, I refer to hemorheology as the H Factor, or the Methuselah Factor. The latter designation is inspired by a character in Middle Eastern literature who reputedly was the longest-lived human. Im convinced that, whatever else he had going for him, Methuselah had great hemorheology.
This book is designed as a practical, how-to guide. In thirty days or less, youll not only understand many of the important nuances of hemorheology but also skillfully harness this oft-neglected key to longevity and high-quality living. Granted, its not the Fountain of Youth, but medical science concurs with my clinical experience when I say youre about to embark on a thirty-day journey calculated to help you live longer and better.

LAYING THE METHUSELAH FACTOR FOUNDATION
A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF HEMORHEOLOGY, THE METHUSELAH FACTOR
LIKE ME, YOURE PROBABLY a bit skeptical when you hear about the latest medical breakthrough. Your skepticism probably increases when you find the touted breakthrough is the subject of another health book or product.
Such skepticism is warranted. Every year volumes of drivel cross my desk, purporting to be the latest panacea or medical breakthrough. Theres almost always a significant price tag, even if the purveyors are touting a natural product. So, although Im not selling anything to boost hemorheology (youll see throughout the pages of this book my practical strategies are extremely cost-effective and require no proprietary agents), I am the author of this volumeand thus, ostensibly, could have something to gain by championing the latest snake oil.
However, even a quick internet search reveals that hemorheology is bona fide science. Numerous medical societies focus on this and related topics. Selected examples include the Asian Union for Microcirculation, the British Microcirculation Society, the European Society for Clinical Hemorheology and Microcirculation, the German Society for Microcirculation and Vascular Biology, the International Society of Biorheology, the International Society of Clinical Hemorheology, the Israeli Society for Microcirculation, the Italian Society of Clinical Hemorheology and Microcirculation, the Japanese Society of Hemorheology, and the Russian Association for Regional Haemodynamics and Microcirculation. Furthermore, whole medical journals have been devoted to hemorheology and related sciences. These include
