      About the Expert
Jessica Child is an animal lover living in Colorado who cannot help but collect and learn more and more about the animal husbandry hobby. She has been keeping cats, dogs, and fish since she was a child, and began keeping amphibians and reptiles as an adult. Her newest friends include a St. Bernard / Pyrenees puppy to keep her Labs busy. She has also recently picked up more millipedes and beetles. The beetles are still grubs, munching away every slice of apple offered to them when theyre not eating leaves.
In between hunting down extra snacks for these pets, she takes time to find good fried chicken, tacos and salsa, and bread.

    Animal Welfare Introduction

This book is dedicated to the animal and creature lover who sees an animal and wants to see it thrive in their home but hasnt yet made heads or tails of vague care sheets and conflicting information.

This eBook isnt an ultimate guide on how to care for each, individual pet since each species has a breadth of its own needs and preferences. Even further, every pet and its care changes constantly as we grow and change.

There will always be a new book, article, and expert that tells you what is out and what is in, but the core needs of your pet will never change (even as we better understand what those needs are).

Fish are a major example, as aquatic habitats have gone from colored gravel with plastic plants to carefully crafted underwater scenes with meticulously selected fish and complementing plants. However, shrimp have and always will love algae and having a safe, comfortable place to hide. We also now realize they thrive better with a variety of minerals in the water as well.

Instead of being a complete guide, this book aims to teach you how to think about what you want to keep and how to keep it. In each category, we will cover what type of pet you might consider and how to decide if it is something you would enjoy having.

We will consider the natural habitat of these pets and how to replicate them, what types of species will live in this habitat, and what foods are best and most nutritious for them. Our goal is to provide them everything they need on a regular basis, so they can live as long as possible!

As you delve deeper into caring for your pets, keep in mind that the Animal Welfare hobby is large, as generic as it is specific, and filled with others who want to share their knowledge. There is always a forum or store filled with people who want to answer your questions, maximize the health of your friends, and get you further hooked!

My first piece of advice as an enthusiast is to find a local resource. If you keep cats or dogs, a good vet is your priority. If you can find a vet who works with other types of pets, thats definitely a good idea. For aquatics, reptiles, etc. it is good to find a quality local pet store that is run by enthusiasts. Youre looking for someone who makes a living on their expertise with your pets care, not just selling you something. They will be who you can call in an emergency just as much as somebody you can pass a question by.

Chapter 1: Above Ground, Underwater: Amphibian Husbandry

When youre considering an amphibian, youre considering a group of animals that live anywhere a reliable body of water exists. When referring to amphibians, we usually mean vertebrates belonging to the class amphibia. We mean creatures like frogs and salamanders with slick skin that can breathe and walk outside of water even long term. They are cold blooded and can breathe through their skin. In adulthood, they may never need to swim in water again (and may be legitimately terrible at it), but they will still need a humid environment to thrive.

At the same time, amphibious is a term that implies the ability to survive on land as well as water. This makes this conversation more complicated simply because amphibious is a term that can be applied to invertebrates and reptiles as well. Their care needs may resemble an amphibians, but they still require attention to their true species needs as well. An example is that aquatic and semi-aquatic turtles may have amphibious qualities, but they are still part of the reptile family and require lighting (such as UVA/B) that a tree frog wouldnt require.

    Habitat & Environment

You will find an amphibian in nearly any biome in the world. If there is water on a consistent basis, you will probably find amphibians.

This section should give you an idea of what habitats you can have and if its a habitat you would want to maintain.

Among all of them, youll find these common elements.

Amphibians have delicate skin and anything living within water is likely sensitive to chlorine. Use dechlorinated water wherever possible.
