Introduction

Enter a fantastic world of magic and enchantment and journey through this original collection of fabulous cross stitch designs.

Where will you start your voyage? Astride winged Pegasus flying across the cosmos, or deep in the ocean with beguiling mermaids? Will you nestle among fragrant flowers with the fairies, or brave the thorns surrounding the fairytale castle of Sleeping Beauty? You may instead be drawn, willing or unwilling, into the exotic world of fierce and fabled Chinese dragons. The secret chamber of a master wizard may tempt you to enter, perhaps in the hope of seeing a magnificent phoenix rising from its own ashes.

The choice is yours: this fantasy world has been created for you to explore, and, as you create a little magic of your own in cross stitch, enjoy working with brilliant colours, glittering metallic threads and gleaming beads.

These three glorious designs reflect aspects of the magical world the power of earth magic, the enchantment of fairy magic and the seduction of dark magic. Stitch the Earth Goddess (page 24), the Fairy Queene (page 60) and the Dark Sorceress (page 40) as individual pictures or all three in matching frames to create a truly mesmerizing trio.

Rainbow Pegasus

A winged horse what could be more magical? This stunning design shows the mighty winged steed, Pegasus, as bright as the sun in golden-yellow shades, racing through the universe.

The design is filled with symbolic imagery: the rainbow-hued stellar images of the cosmos are a reminder that the father of the gods, Zeus, immortalized Pegasus with a constellation bearing his name. The fluttering butterflies represent the more earthly aspect of Pegasus, belonging to the meadows he grazed upon long ago. The beautifully ornate border, in a lovely shade of blue to signify purity, was inspired by patterns seen in medieval strapwork.

This beautiful winged horse will delight any stitcher; with its rainbow colours it is easy to stitch using just full cross stitches mostly in blocks of colours.

This gorgeous winged horse is a companion piece to the fabulous Phoenix design on page 32. It has been worked on white Aida but could be stitched on 28-count evenweave. There are also two smaller designs to stitch (see opposite) a pretty butterfly card and a scented sachet showing an impressionistic view of the universe.

Magical Makes

Work the attractive border to create a lovely mirror frame. If stitched on 32-count linen the finished design would be 27cm (10in) square. Cut a 28cm (11in) square of thick mount board and stretch the finished embroidery over the board, securing it at the back with lacing (see page 99) or strong fabric glue. Glue a mirror tile in the centre of the design to finish.
