Chapter 1: Introduction Of Yoga
Yoga is not a religion. It is a science, science of well-being, science of youthfulness, science of integrating body, mind and soul.
Amit Ray
B eginning over 5,000 years ago in India, yoga has long been a discipline of spiritual and physical exercise. The practices include meditation, controlled breathing, and body postures that encourage health through relaxation. The goal is to unite the body, mind, and soul to reach an inner harmony and ultimately making life more calm and happy.
Principles of Yoga
E very yoga practitioner lives by a customized set of goals, beliefs, and principles. There are a few things that are common across different types of yoga, however. Relaxation is one of those principles . Unlike other types of exercise, there is no high impact jumping, running, or lifting. You'll need to focus on getting your body, mind, and spirit to relax. Easing your muscles into a state of rest instead of tension takes work. You'll learn how to train your body to relax and remain pliable.
Another principle is proper breathing. A lot of yoga revolves around paying attention to your incoming and outgoing breath. You'll take slow, purposeful breaths and work on increasing oxygen and blood flow throughout your body. Breathing properly can help you balance your moods and increase your strength. You'll be calmer and able to access your energy source and your "Prana" or life force.
Nutrition is another huge principle in yoga , which is why it is so useful in losing weight. When you try to keep your life and spirit in balance, you're going to pay attention to the fuel you're providing your body. The goal is to nourish your mind and your body with healthy, fresh foods. A light and strong body is required for the serious practice of yoga, and you'll get there faster if you're making good eating choices.
Finally, mediation is important to yoga. You'll do a lot of work with visualization and peaceful thinking. Positive energy is essential to your success. The physical work you do will be combined with controlling the way you think and behave.
Types of Yoga
T here are several different types of yoga and the best results will come from choosing a yoga style that matches your abilities and goals. Hatha yoga is a great introduction of yoga for beginners. If you're just getting started or you've never done yoga before, try this easygoing form of stretching and breathing. You'll find it relaxing and restorative.
Another popular yoga form is Vinyasa yoga. This is especially good for people who are trying to lose weight because you are consistently moving from pose to pose and position to position. Therefore, you get a bit of a cardiovascular workout with your yoga practice. You can burn up to seven calories a minute through different combinations of lunges, floor work, and standing poses.
Bikram yoga will also help you lose weight and build your flexibility. It's used in "hot yoga" practices, where you work out in studios that are incredibly hot. Practitioners find it therapeutic to sweat out the body's impurities and toxins while doing yoga.
Benefits of Yoga
T he practice of yoga provides a lot of benefits for your physical, mental, and emotional health. You can use it to feel calm and relaxed. Yoga trains your body to be open, flexible, and in sync with your mind and your heart. It can supplement an existing exercise plan and it's great for people who are looking to focus on breathing, stretching, and achieving the elusive state of inner peace.
Weight Loss Benefits of Yoga
Not a lot of people realize what a productive calorie burner yoga can be. It's not going to have you jumping and sweating like running, basketball, or cross training. However, you do get a consistent calorie burn every time you dedicate 30 minutes or 60 minutes to yoga. Even a beginning yoga routine, with poses and positions found in Hatha yoga, allows you to burn around 300 calories in an hour. If you're going to pick up the pace a bit and do a more intense form of yoga such as Ashtanga or Vinyasa, you'll be able to burn even more.
Yoga blends physical fitness with emotional and mental fitness. A large part of successful weight loss is positive thinking. When you incorporate a regular yoga practice into your weight loss strategy, you are training your mind to harness the power of intention and positivity. As you are stretching and holding poses, you can take the opportunity to visualize yourself as thinner, stronger, and healthier. Existing in a state of expectation will help weight loss flow to you naturally. The mind is a powerful weapon in your weight loss battle and yoga will help you get in touch with that intention and put it to work for you.
Yoga is an affirming, positive way to change your life. Whether you're just getting started or building upon a practice you already have in place, you'll see instant benefits in the way you look and feel.
Chapter 2: Two-Week Yoga Training Plan For Beginners: Week One
Corpse Pose sounds like no big deal, right? Then whats so difficult about this spiritualized snooze? Forget about getting your feet behind your head. Just try lying still for ten minutes. With nothing left to do, youre finally forced to come face to face with yourself.
Edward Vilga
Y oga requires no specific ability to start, can be done without any equipment, and can be practiced almost anywhere. These reasons make this an excellent exercise for beginners and people wishing to practice at home. Although there are no real requirements for what to wear during yoga, it is helpful to wear yoga pants, leggings, or shorts, and a top that is comfortable, but not too baggy. You will also want to practice barefoot and may want to practice on a towel or a mat.
