Bon appetite! brenda stanley | thats a lot of crock A Quick History of Slow Cooking The original version of the slow cooker began with the use of iron pots hung over a fire or buried in hot coals. The food was simmered for many hours. This was a great way to tenderize tough meats and dense, fibrous vegetables. It was also considered cost efficient. The Naxon Utilities Company of Chicago was the first to manufacture a version of what we use today.
It was originally called the Naxon Beanery. It was composed of a ceramic pot that was fitted in a metal pan surrounded by heating elements. The Rival Company bought out Naxon in 1970. Just a year later, Rival took the concept of the Beanery and produced an appliance with a similar function called the Crock-Pot. In 1974, Rival also created the removable ceramic pot, which became useful in both storing and cleanup.

Dont open the lid of the cooker to check on things. It takes 15 minutes to reach the desired level of heat again. The slow cooker should be between half and two-thirds full. Too much or too little food will affect the outcome of the dish. For meals that serve between four and ten people, use a 5- to 6-quart slow cooker, which is considered standard size. Thaw meats before placing in the slow cooker.
Avoid placing the hot cooker insert directly onto a cold surface or in cold water. The shock could make it crack.
