About the Author

Hello there! My name is Christopher Hill.

I have been an international English professor for more than 25 years, during which time I have taught at all levels and many age groups from High School up to young adults. I have taught at a few big organizations in Japan, Vietnam, Germany, Taiwan, Universities, and technical colleges.

I have extensive experience teaching Business English in addition to General English. I also help ESL students prepare for English exams such as TOEFL iBT, IELTS, TOEIC, and BEC.

I was an official examiner for IELTS, Cambridge Assessment, and TEA. This allows me to assess my students level and give my students a more custom and tailor-made approach for learning how to speak English more fluently.

I love helping others reach their language goals. I want students to feel confident, to have fun, and to find relevancy in what we are doing!

I am extremely blessed to able to teach and support all of you in reaching your individual goals. As English has become such a crucial skill for connecting with the world at large - be it for business, education or pleasure

THE IMPORTANCE AND THE POPULARITY OF THE ENGLISH
Picture 11

T he incessant rise enjoyed by the English language is founded on the growth of the British Empire in the world of politics. The English language began its widespread from the British Isles. From there, it spread its tentacles across the globe through trade. This means of spreading was a result of the intention of the British Empire, to engage in trading (this involves buying and selling) with other nations of the world. As a result of the focus of England on trading, the English language gradually became dominant in areas such as Asia and Africa where trade had been thriving for ages. The fact that only a few Britons settled in these locations of the world made it impossible for English to become the mother tongue of the people living in those areas. But, most of these nations still retained the English language as their official or semi-formal language as a result of their colonization and inclusion in the British Empire. Countries, such as Canada, New Zealand, and Australia were once part of the British Empire, while countries like Nigeria, Ghana Sierra Leone, and South Africa were once colonies of the British Empire.

The Popularity of the English language didnt stop at the influence of the British Empire. It was extended by the rise of the United States. The 19th century birthed the rise of the United States. At the time when Europe was recovering from the effects of the first and second world wars, the United States was booming and becoming powerful. There was a rise in trade activities in the USA, and the English language kept on growing as the language of trade. The popularity of the English language today is built on the influence of American businesses and the already existing tradition, which considers it as the language of trade. The rise of the United States didnt come without its challenge to traditional English. It did come, as there was a development of another form of English, which is American English.

American English became so popular that the traditional English couldnt stand against it. A good example of the American English influence is seen in Hong Kong a former colony of the British Empire. There are more people who are interested in learning American English rather than the British variety. Since trade has been booming in the United States, it is just so expected that countries of the world would prefer its variety of English to that of other varieties.
