GRACIAS Y BESOS

Ive always looked at the acknowledgments pages of books with a great deal of curiosity. Who are all those people? How did they contribute? Does it really take a village to birth a book?

Turns out it doesbut not in the way I expected.

I have loved every minute of writing this book and have been so privileged to have the opportunity to do it in my own funky way.

Picture 3Thank you, Argentina.

I offer cheek kisses and red wine toasts to those who played a role in nurturing me throughout the half-year I spent working on this book from my living room sofa in Buenos Aires. This village includes my cheerful neighbors and my beloved polyglot group of friends from around the world who never failed to ask about the project during our many dinners and coffees together.

Im so glad that there is not a single mega-English bookstore in the entire (enormous) country. Blissfully removed from stacks of best sellers, I was free to enjoy the writing process without worrying about competition or critics. What a blessing! (Of course, it made walking back into Powells Books in Portland, Oregon, quite a shock.)

Picture 4Thank you, Google and the Internet.

I found my wonderful agent, Stephanie Kip Rostan of Levine Greenberg Literary Agency, online. I am indebted to Sophfronia Scott, the e-mail goddess who steered me in the right direction by putting me in touch with Heather Proulx, the delightful woman who became my editor at Random House/Crown. I have felt fully supported by Stephanie and Heather the entire time, even though I did not meet either of themor even talk to them on the phoneuntil well after the book was written! Consider it a testament to the new way of collaborating globally. Many thanks for the virtual high fives.
