This book is dedicated to the memory of Dolph and Mary Marshall and
Margaret downing.
For all the time you gave me.
From quiet homes and first beginning,
Out to the undiscovered ends,
Theres nothing worth the wear of winning,
But laughter and the love of friends.
Hilaire Belloc

I am immensely grateful, once again, for the generous help and advice on technical aspects of the draft chapters of this book from experts in the fields that I have covered. In chapter order, they are as follows. For reading and advising on sporting guns (excepting binoculars and pest control) in chapter 1, I thank Roy Lyu, Gunroom Manager of Boss & Co, as well as for the illustrations that appear in Plates 3 to 6 inclusive (Plates 4 and 6 also appear on the cover). I also thank a private collector (who wishes to remain anonymous), for the use of the image in Plate 2 of the duelling pistols made by Robert Wogdon (which are in a private collection), and for reading over the section on duelling and duelling pistols in chapter 1.
For reading and advising on game fishing in chapter 2, I thank Edward Barder, as well as for the images in Plates 8 and 9 (Plate 9 also appears on the cover). For reading and advising on falconry in chapter 3 I thank both Jevgeni Shergalin, Archivist of The Falconry Trust (as well as for Plate 10), and Nick Kester. For reading and advising on hats (especially those for hunting), I thank Janet Taylor of Patey Hats, who has been, as ever, a rich source of valuable learning, generously shared; as well as for the images in Plates 12, 13 and 14. Likewise, I thank Douglas Simpson, of Ascot Hats Ltd, for sharing a store of accumulated information and records, concerning the first patenting of silk plush for hats in England and the origination of the first silk plush top hats there.
For reading and advising on roses in chapter 7 and for the image in Plate 22 I thank Peter Beales of Peter Beales Roses and for reading and advising on bees and bee-keeping, in the same chapter, I thank apiarist Mrs Karen Mann, of Crane Brook, St Margarets, Twickenham. For looking over the draft book as a whole I also thank: Dr Ron Collins, Laurence Mann (also for Plate 23); Dr Julian Critchlow; Chikashi Miyamoto, and Dr Marcelo dAraujo of Laranjeiras. I thank as well, again, the whole team at Remember When; including my commissioning editor, Lisa Hooson, and my copy editor, Sue Blackhall.
Apart from those mentioned above, for kind permission to use other illustrations, in plate order, I thank the following:
Plate 7 J Roberts & Son
For help with Plates 15, 16 and 19 and for the images in Plates 18 and 24, I thank my father.
Plate 17 Erin Shipley, Westminster City Archives
Plate 20 My cousins Brian and Susan Bazeley.
Plate 25 Annamaria Duvia, of Villa DEste, Lake Como.
Plate 26 Joanna Kersley, of The Venice-Simplon-Orient Express.
Plate 27 Martin Daly of The School Garage.
Plate 28 Louis Lejeune Ltd.
Plate 29 Mr TAD Crook, of Bristol Cars Ltd.
Plate 30 Eva Reinecke of Badrutts Palace Hotel, St. Moritz. This image also appears on the cover.
Additionally:
Plate 1 is from an original cartoon, by Thomas Rowlandson (17561827). It also appears on the cover.
Plate 10 is from an original illustration by Dr Afred E. Brehm (18291884), published in Cassells Book of Birds, by Thomas Rymer Jones (1874).
Plate 11 is from the original painting of Lord Ribblesdale, by John Singer Sargent (18561925). It also appears on the cover.
Plate 15 is from an old engraving of Robert Coates, of unknown provenance.
Plate 16 is from an original cartoon, by George du Maurier (18341896), published in Punch, on 9 November 1895.
Plate 19 is from an original painting, by John Wootton (16821764).
Plate 21 is from an original Spy cartoon, by Sir Leslie Ward (18511922), published in Vanity Fair, on 29 June 1889.
Plate 31 is from an original cartoon poster by Elizabeth Pyke.
There are some glossaries of terms, which I have included in the text and not, in the more usual way, placed at the end of the book, because they contain terms which are relevant only to the passages of the book in which they appear and are not terms that appear throughout.
Following my general recent practice, there is no list of suppliers contact details and, again, this is because these lists soon become dated. Most of the businesses (and other organizations) mentioned have their own websites (easily found through searching the business or organization names) and those few that do not may be found in the telephone directories. Sometimes, where businesses have websites, I have made use of some of the information to be found there.
Where clothing is discussed or might seem relevant, further detail is available in History of Mens Fashion, to which I occasionally make cross reference.
No one who has helped me with advice or illustrations should be taken, necessarily, to endorse any of the opinions that I express (including political opinions) and, although I have done my best to ensure that the draft has passed before renowned experts on the technical aspects of some of the things that I cover, for any remaining errors I alone am responsible.

Introduction
You never enjoy the world aright till the sea itself floweth in your veins, till you are clothed with the heavens and crowned with the stars.
The Rev. Thomas Traherne MA (born circa 1636, died 1674)
W hen Dr Samuel Johnson made his remark that
there is in London all that life can afford
there were still, within easy walking distance of the Fleet Street off which he lived (variously in Gough Square, Inner Temple Lane, and Bolt Court), farms, open fields and, on them, country sporting activities. This is no longer true and London is, apart from modest areas of preserved and prettified parkland and some golf and sports clubs, a vast conurbation; separated from the countryside and the pursuits that may be had there. This means that, to enjoy a fully rounded life, it is necessary to split ones time between town and country, according to the seasons and having regard to the events and activities in both places, as well as leavening each years experience with travel as far and wide as possible.
