My hope for you in reading and working through this book is that youll leave it feeling empowered to be artsy, confident in your hand-embroidery skills, and able to embrace your imperfectionsstitched or not.
This book is broken down into five sections placed in an order meant to be as helpful as possible; that said, I dont want you to approach this book thinking you absolutely must start from the beginning and work your way, page by page, to the end. Instead, let me take you through a brief overview of each section, so you can better determine where you might start and how you might use this book toward your own specific goals.
In this section, I take you through my personal approach to hand embroidery as a crafter, designer, and teacher. I explain how this medium might serve as a sort of corrective emotional experience for you, as it did for me, and how to best set yourself up for that sort of experience. Whether youre coming to hand embroidery for help with other areas of your life, as a simple crafty outlet, or some combination of both, I hope youll take the time to read through the key reminders at the end of this first section of the book, where Ive written out the bulk of my overall best advice for approaching this craft as a new stitcher.
In this section, I take you through embroidery supplies by placing them into one of two categories: the essential tools for getting started and optional tools you might consider having handy or collecting as you get deeper into the craft. If youre brand new to hand embroidery, I recommend starting with the essential supplies, working within your own personal financial and geographical constraints to obtain the needed tools for your first few projects.
Here, I explain all the steps you might take to get prepared for stitching, such as how to use an embroidery hoop, how to thread a needle, and so on. Youll find information in this section about your different options for transferring designs to fabric, how to start and end your floss, and what to do once youve finished stitching and are ready to back your hoop.
This section is meant to serve as a sort of reference for the projects in this book, as well as any personal projects you might complete in the future. Here, Ive provided photo and written instructions for all the stitches and techniques used to create the projects in this book. There are hundreds of embroidery stitches available to you, and I hope the selection of techniques Ive chosen for this book are useful as you begin to learn the craft. These stitches are organized into stitches used to follow lines and curves, stitches for vines and foliage, stitches used to fill in spaces, and isolated stitches and embellishments.
You do not need to learn all of the stitches and techniques in this book before jumping into your first project. Instead, I recommend learning these on an as-needed basis, slowly adding to your skillset as you work on and complete projects.
When working through the projects in this book, feel free to substitute stitches to fit your own developing preferences: aesthetic and otherwise. For example, if youre working on a project that suggests using split back stitch to follow the lines and curves of the pattern but youd prefer to use a different stitch, you can always substitute split back for another stich that you like better.
As youll learn, there are no rules in hand embroidery, only preferencesdo what feels right for you.
This last section of the book is where youll find projects grouped into broad themes: florals, houseplants, fruits, skies, animals, and mushrooms. Each theme includes three levels of projects. In the Level 1 projects, youll find simple and relatively quick designs meant to help you gain confidence as you begin to learn hand embroidery. In the Level 2 projects, youll find designs that use up a bit more energy and time, aimed to help you gain increasing skills and knowledge. The projects in Levels 1 and 2 are designed for 3-inch (7.6-cm) embroidery hoops. This makes these particularly quick, fun projects to complete. Finally, in the Level 3 projects, youll find larger, more intricate designs intended to build your expertise. The projects in Level 3 are designed for 4-inch (10.2-cm) hoops, which are small enough to not be intimidating but allow ample space for those more sophisticated designs.
You should feel free to approach these projects in whatever way feels best for you. For example, you might choose to complete all the Level 1 projects from each theme before moving on to Levels 2 or 3. Alternatively, you may decide to complete the projects theme by theme, completing all levels of a theme before moving on to another. If youre not sure where to start, however, I would encourage you to start with your favorite design (regardless of its level or theme). The more you like the look of a design, the more likely youll be to follow through with completing it, thus gaining the confidence necessary to move on to other projects.
Take a moment to consider what drew you to this book. Perhaps youre simply interested in developing a new hobby or skill, one that allows you to express yourself creatively. Youve probably seen hand embroidery online or in person and thought to yourself, I could make that! If thats the casewelcome! I cant wait to be one of your introductions to my very favorite craft! Perhaps, however, youre looking for an activity that provides you with some means of relaxation, or even an emotionally transformative experience.
Regardless of what drew you to this book and to embroidery in general, I hope to set you up for both creative and emotional success. In this chapter, I start by exploring the use of hand embroidery as a technique for practicing and achieving mindfulness, a necessary conversation given how often the craft is described in this way. Next, I describe the specific and nuanced ways in which embroidery has improved my own life and mental health. Finally, I outline a few key reminders for you to keep in mind both before you get started and as you work your way through the projects in this book and on your own. You can think of these reminders as little pep talks, from me to you, as you work against the perfectionism and self-doubt that so often accompany learning a new skill like embroidery.
