Introduction
The first and second seasons of this series feature a psychologically disturbed lonely man, Joe Goldberg, who in his quest for love and affection; did odd and terrifying things that made us realize that there is actually a very thin line between love, obsession, and madness. Coming from a dysfunctional family where his mother was a serial cheat, and his father an abusive, chronic smoker, Joe was brought up with a very odd understanding of love and care.
Joe ended up killing his father during one of the moments when his father assaulted his mother, and his mother made him believe that he did what he did because he was a good boy who was only protecting his mother from harm. Joe grew up with this mindset and found himself wanting to protect the women he loved; howbeit in a wrong way. He was always trying to protect them from getting closer to people who are not him, people who were bad for them according to his definition of bad. The first season of the Netflix series features Joe stalking and trying to win the love of Guinevere Beck, an MFA up and coming writer. The duo met at Mooneys Bookstore; the bookstore Joe works at. The meeting leaves Joe obsessively in love, and he was determined to go to any length to have Beck.
He succeeded but not before he had her stalked and monitored (technologically and humanly) by himself. The duo ended up becoming an item; an activity that helped to heighten Joes stalking and obsessions; and which further led to the death of every and anyone who wanted to destroy what they had; Benji (Becks ex), Peach (Becks best friend), and to our amazement. He killed Beck too. Like who kills the love of their life? We guess someone who is psychotic and obsessed like Joe Goldberg. In between the series, we were introduced to Joes ex-girlfriend, Candace, who was the first object of Joes obsessiveness and killer tendencies. She cheated on him, he found out and killed the man she cheated with.
He tried to kill Candace too, and we all thought he did, only for him and us to find out she survived the assault, and she came back to destroy him in the second season. But the movies narrative changes in the second season when Joe relocates to Los Angeles meets another woman (Love); begins to date her, but this time the story changes as love become as manipulative and dangerous as Joe when it comes to love matters. As a chef and heiress, you would expect that love would be your dream girl: the perfect, cool, open-minded, kind, and free chef who cooks up magic in the kitchen; and wants to find love. But what Joe and everyone didnt know was that she was a killer and manipulator in disguise. Just like Joe does; she kills anyone who she suspects to have an interest in her man, Joe; hence she killed Delilah and Candace. In addition, she pushes the death of Comedian Henderson and Candace on her brother, Forty; all in an obsessive bid to save Joe from the law, and build a future with him, and we cant but take the Mad and In Love award from Joe, and just hand it over to love.
