Do you even know what Kawaii is?
So, Kawaii is a Japanese trend that means lovable, adorable and cute things. This Cookbook is for old and new kawaii fans alike.
Kawaii is popular in the pop culture of Japan, mostly among the manga and anime fans. The treats include happy shapes like hearts, bows and bright colors. If the item is cute and irresistible, then its definitely kawaii!
Though its been common to Japan for decades, kawaii trend is being recognized around the world. From Kitty Chan (known as Hello Kitty elsewhere) (known as Kitty Chan in Japan) to all kinds of cute animals in general, thats kawaii.
Just take a look on Pinterest or Instagram and see the various characters and animals and used in kawaii cooking and baking. The foods which are being prepared not only include all types of cakes, lollipop and treats but waffles and sandwiches which can be packed in bento lunch boxes too.
When you are baking, cooking or preparing sandwiches and treats, ensure the designs are always cute. Usually, they have faced happy expressions, unique colors and small shapes.
The cuteness of characters of these tasty treats is bringing Kawaii. Come on, lets make some of these adorable treats! What could really be sweeter?
Fluffy Japanese Pancakes
Everyone seems to love pancakes, and these are especially delicious. They make great kids pancakes, with animal faces.
Serves:
Time: 1 hr. 10 mins.
Ingredients:
- flour (1 cup, all-purpose)
- baking powder (2 tsp)
- sugar (2 tbsp, granulated)
- salt (1/8 tsp, kosher)
- milk (1 cup, whole)
- egg (1, large)
- butter (2 tbsp, melted)
- vanilla extract (1 tsp, pure)
- water (1 tsp, filtered)
For decorating: Candy melts (melted), fruits
Directions:
1. Whisk together the kosher salt, sugar, baking powder and flour in a large sized bowl.
2. In a separate medium bowl, combine the melted butter, egg, vanilla extract and milk.
3. Next, pour the wet mixture into dry one then, mix just until combined.
4. Lightly spray pan using non-stick spray then preheat over low heat for approximately, 6-8 minutes.
5. Spray a metal pancake mold/cookie cutter heavily using non-stick spray then place them into the pan (preheated).
6. Pour into the pancake batter and fill mold until 3/4 to top of mold. Add a tsp of water then cover. Allow to steam for approximately 18 minutes until center isnt jiggly when you shake the pan.
7. Flip the pancakes carefully then cover and steam for an additional 3-5 more minutes.
8. Remove from the pan and allow them to cool a bit. Remove from the mold gently. Decorate as you desire, with cute animal faces.
Kawaii Pup-cakes
These pup-cakes will be a hit with any child. They are as delicious as they are adorable.
Serves: 5 Cupcakes
Time: 30 mins.
Ingredients:
- baking powder (1/3 tsp)
- vanilla extract (2 tsp, pure)
- tsp (1/8 tsp, salt, sea)
- egg (1, large)
- sugar (1/4 cup, granulated)
- butter (4 tbsp, unsalted, melted, then cooled a bit)
- milk (1/4 cup, whole)
- container (1, frosting)
- Food coloring
- Flour (1/3 cup, all-purpose)
Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350F. Spray five muffin cups in muffin pan.
2. Combine baking powder, flour and sea salt in small sized bowl and set it aside.
3. Whisk sugar and egg in large sized bowl for 25-35 seconds. Add melted butter and vanilla extract. Whisk till combined well.
4. Add 1/2 dry ingredients to wet mixture. Whisk till combined. Then add milk. Whisk till just barely combined.
5. Add remaining dry ingredients. Whisked till combined fully.
6. Evenly divide batter in five muffin cups.
7. Bake for 14-15 minutes, till toothpick inserted in middle of one cupcake comes back clean. Cool well and frost with white, tan, black or brown frosting.
8. Decorate the tops of cupcakes like puppy dogs.
Japanese Sweet Kawaii Omelets
In this dish, they are also made whimsical and cute.
Serves:
Time: 15 mins.
Ingredients:
- eggs (4, large)
- water (2 tbsp, filtered)
- soy sauce (2 tsp, low sodium)
- sugar (2 tsp, granulated)
Directions:
1. Mix the water, soy sauce, eggs and granulated sugar with a fork in medium bowl till combined well.
2. Heat large skillet on med. heat. Pour the egg mixture into the skillet. Stir. Cook till no liquid is visible anymore. Fold.
3. Slice in half and place on plates. Decorate with animal faces using edible pen.
Kawaii Chocolate Animal Pops
The cute animals so popular in kawaii culture are made SO much easier when you use chocolate molds, like the ones used here.
