Contemporary Music Tourism: A Theory of Musical Topophilia: summary, description and annotation

This book explores the growing phenomenon of music tourism - instances of people visiting places because of a connection with music. Asking how an abstract art form such as music can lead to tourism and how the popularity of music tourism in contemporary culture might be explained, it presents a comparative study of musical tourism in various locations across Europe, in relation to a range of musical genres. Through the concept of musical topophilia, the author offers a timely and insightful analysis of the affective attachment to place and music, showing how and why music literally moves people. This account enables us to grasp the complex ways in which music, place, and tourism are connected in practice. Based on empirical case studies, Contemporary Music Tourism lays the foundation for a theoretical grounding of music tourism as a research field and, as such, will appeal to scholars of geography, music, sociology, tourism, and cultural studies.

Before exploring the ways in which music serves to ignite the tourist imagination, I would like to pay homage to the people who have helped and encouraged me to write it. First and foremost, I could not have written this book without the trust, love and encouragement of my husband Arno Van Weert. Thank you for all that you are and the happiness we share, across the sometimes-separate worlds and spaces we spend our lives in. I feel lucky for experiencing the unconditional love and support of my family: my dear parents, my big brothers and your brilliant families, my family-in-law I love you. Moreover, thanks to my two excellent groups of friends that have offered me respite and escape from thinking and writing through their company, especially during joyous weekends away and by holding on to mighty traditions such as Sinterkerst.
On an academic note, the research that forms the basis of this book was part of the project Locating Imagination. An Interdisciplinary Perspective on Literary, Film and Music Tourism , funded by the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research (grant number PR-11-77), which ran from 2013 to 2017 at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Sincere gratitude goes out to my mentors Stijn Reijnders and Susanne Janssen. I am deeply grateful for your encouragement and feedback over the years, while my PhD project took shape. The Erasmus Research Centre for Media and Communication (ERMeCC) at Erasmus University Rotterdam has been a nurturing environment, supporting my scholarly development by providing an inspiring research setting, and in a more practical sense, through offering additional grants and valuable administrative support. During my PhD, my thinking and writing further developed through the work of the reviewers who evaluated my research articles, through the Institute of Popular Music in Liverpool that welcomed me for a research visit (in particular Sara Cohen, Marion Leonard, and Hae-Kyung Um), and the members of my PhD committee. I also want to thank my fellow PhDs from the ERMeCC PhD club, some of whom have become friends beyond academia.
During the final stages of my PhD, I was offered a position as assistant professor at the Department of Cultural Geography at the University of Groningen. Thank you for putting your faith in me and my work, as well as giving me the space and support to develop my research and teaching further. In my new role I continue to explore the many dimensions of music tourism, beyond the research presented in this book. In this regard I would like to express my gratitude to Jeffrey Horner from Wayne State University, who took me on a particularly fabulous tour of the hidden music heritage locations of Detroit.
The team at Routledge has been very supportive of this project from the outset thank you Neil Jordan and Alice Salt for your encouragement and patient answering of questions. I am particularly grateful to Janna Michael and Abby Waysdorf for giving feedback on revised chapters of this book. I would like to acknowledge that with permission of the publishers, some parts of the following texts appear throughout the chapters of this book:

The figure of media tourism used in is a reprint of the figure on page 17 of the following publication:
