INTRODUCTION
Does the thought of speaking in front of a group make your heart flutter and turn your hands clammy?
The good news: You can get over that fear in a matter of weeks if not days (and sometimes hours). Even better news: Good public speaking and presentation skills can do more for your career than years of experience and an arm-load of degrees from the most prestigious universities. That's how much business people respect and admire those who can educate an audience or move it to action.
Why are good presentation skills more important than ever? The business world is changing. Teamwork is in vogue, companies are "flattening" out as traditional hierarchies disappear, and partnerships and alliances with organizations outside your own are becoming more common. Even senior managers have less opportunity to "command and control" a body of troopsyet they have more responsibility than ever to motivate people to act in line with the organization's strategies and values.
Good speaking skills can be learned. As Dale Carnegie often said, "No one is a born speaker." To learn, you need this book.
Page 8
You also need opportunities to speak in front of others. If you don't have such opportunities often enough, you can create them by taking a Dale Carnegie course or joining Toastmasters.
You'll never regret acquiring presentation skills. For one thing, a majority of Americans, according to the Book of Lists, would rather die (literally) than get up to speak in front of an audience. If you are among this group, imagine the personal power you will earn by confronting one of your deepest fears and over-coming it.
For another, presentation skills go a long way in business. The opportunities to inform, influence, and get action from a large number of people are increasing, even for employees at the bottom of the organization chart. And the ability to write isn't enough in today's business world. Powerful speaking beats a good memo any day. It's also a magnet that draws attention to you and your abilities.
