Preface
For the more than three decades that I have been playing and coaching basketball, I have observed countless situations on the court and literally thousands of individuals attempting to play the game to the best of their abilities. Collectively, my experiences have given me an opportunity to evaluate many techniques and fundamentals for playing competitive basketball and a variety of methods for teaching those techniques and fundamentals. In the process, I have come to realize that true learning occurs when there is a need to know, a solid understanding of how to learn exists, and coaches and players realize that a particular goal can be reached.
My co-authors and I wrote this book to provide basketball coaches at all competitive levels with a tool that can enable them to maximize the skills and attributes of their players. As a vehicle for teaching and learning, properly designed drills can have extraordinary value. Each of the four volumes of drills in this series features drills that I have collected, court-tested, and applied over the course of my coaching career. If in the process of using the drills presented in this book coaches are better able to develop the skills of their players, then the effort to write these drill books will have been well worthwhile.

Drill #1: Box to Jumper
Objective: To safely inbound the ball using a box set.
Description: This drill begins with the ball in the small forward's (SF) hands with the rest of the offense positioned as shown in Diagram A. The point guard (PG) moves over to set a screen for the shooting guard (SG). The center (C) sets a secondary screen to pick off SG's defender if he fights through the screen or if there is a switch. SG breaks off the screens looking for the inbound pass and looks for the quick jumper. If it is not open, SG looks to the lane where C has rolled off the screen, or to the power forward (PF) who has cut to the lane from the low post. If this does not produce the desired results, the action continues as illustrated in Diagram B. The C posts up to create a two-player game with SG. After inbounding the ball, SF breaks off a double screen from PG and PF and look for a pass for the quick jump-shot.
