INTRODUCTION

I will never forget that night I was sitting on the stairs with my little sister in the early hours of morning looking through the gaps of the smooth, white glossed banister. It was the noise of the doorbell during the quiet of the night that woke us and the reason why we were watching from our lofty perch with a clear view of the room below. Even though we didnt speak to one another we both knew something was wrong. And then we were ordered to our rooms to go back to bed by our mum who had floods of tears streaming down her face. At this point we both started to cry too. As the obedient four and two-year olds that we were, we climbed the stairs and went back to sleep still unsure of what was going on.

It wasnt until the morning that we were told the two police officers who had disturbed our peaceful sleep the night before were the bearers of the bad news that our dad had died. He had died in a vehicle accident while on a night shift for the roadside assistance company for which he worked. He had just helped a stricken driver get home with their broken vehicle and he too was on his way home when the accident occurred. Now it all made sense but I didnt want to have this knowledge. I just wanted my dad to come home.

For a very long time I wasnt able to discuss this with anyone; it was too raw and too personal I would just get teary-eyed thinking about my dad. It wasnt until my late twenties that I found the courage to work with a professional to help me put aside my anger, fear, sadness and guilt so I can remember the times of love, happiness and joy. It was at this point that I understood those negative emotions were holding me back, blurring my vision and obstructing my ability to embrace life. I felt released to fulfil why I am here on this earth and started to notice what I loved to do and what I wanted to do to make a difference.

For a long time I had felt like I didnt belong and that I had failed somehow in life and in business. I put too much pressure on myself to fulfil my potential leading to more mistakes. I felt like I had lost my way and didnt know where to turn: frozen stiff, too scared to take a step in any direction in the fear of not fulfilling my potential, letting people down, not making a difference and getting to my destination too late to enjoy it.

I realised that I would always feel like this if I didnt embrace my authentic self and start to enjoy the journey rather than rush through and be disappointed with the end destination. Life is a journey and one I can choose to enjoy or not. The end destination may seem like life will be great when it arrives but life is great now if you choose to look for the happiness, gratitude and the connections you have. Being my authentic self has made me happy and allowed me to feel like I do belong in this world to help those people who get what I do and what I believe in. Embracing the journey of life has enabled me to see the highs and lows as another opportunity to experience and enjoy myself knowing that the end goal is not the be all and end all.

Knowing that life is short, far too short, I wanted to make the most of my life and enjoy it so I started my own business to explore what I love and ultimately help others do the same.

Without all of the things that have occurred in my life I wouldnt be the person that I am today. In a way I am grateful for everything that has happened, good and bad, and I honestly believe that those things have happened for a reason. I do every day miss my dad but I now think of and remember the wonderful time we had together in those short four years of our father-son relationship.

All of my learning and experience up to now have helped me to develop The PROFITS Principles that I guide you through in this book. You will find the seven steps that you need to follow and revisit, as often as you need, to build your dream business and create your definition of success.

As a Chartered Accountant I get to see hundreds of businesses with their clothes off I see their numbers regardless of the image and brand they might have I know whats really going on. Lots of these businesses are not performing as they should partly due to the numbers not being looked at or being understood and partly due to the owner not doing what they should be doing as an owner. Numbers are the language of business but its scary that so many people either dont know, dont like or dont understand their numbers. Sometimes all three. Im their reality check because they may have been putting their head in the sand or putting on a good show and I can tell them how it really is and what to do about it to get to where they want to be. Im able to help them understand their numbers and then help them to take a step towards their goals.
