Breakfast Beverages:
For reasons of habit, lifestyle, or even pouch moodiness a breakfast beverage is the most suitable way for many of us after surgery to begin our day with nourishment. For me, the last thing that sounds appealing on most mornings is a plate or bowl of food, especially if I think back to pre-surgery when a carb-heavy sugar-sweet breakfast of pancakes and syrup was a favorite (and all too common) treat. Over the years Ive learned that in general, the WLS population is in agreement with this. A more palatable, pouch-friendly way to start the day is with a nutrient rich protein fortified beverage that can be sipped slowly as a gentle wake-up to the gastric pouch. For days when the pouch is super-sensitive or grumpy breaking the overnight fast may best be done with a warm cup of herbal tea or warm lemon water. Ginger tea is particularly effective in soothing the gastric system and it helps promote healthy digestion.
In this chapter of Breakfast Basics we take a look at a variety of breakfast beverages to suit our nutritional needs, please our mood, and complement our various lifestyles. Remember each day is unique and what works one day may very well not be suitable the next day. Continue to explore your breakfast beverage options: experiment with different products; include seasonal fruits and vegetables; and make it a habit to start your day with protein and nutrients.
Protein First Shakes, Smoothies, and Coffee
The best part of waking up is protein in the cup! Well, that is certainly how many post WLS-patients feel about their protein shakes, coffee, and smoothies. And it makes good sense to start the day with a high protein easy-to-drink meal because it satisfies morning hunger and stimulates the metabolism to burn more energy (calories) for weight loss and weight maintenance. For rushed mornings try a Ready-To-Drink (RTD) prepared protein drink. Look for a protein drink labeled low-carb that has fewer than 8 grams of sugar and 12 grams of protein or more. Drink chilled or blended with ice for a milkshake-like experience.
Protein shakes can also be made in a blender or shaker cup using a base liquid such as milk, water, or coffee and adding flavoring and protein powder. Preparing protein beverages with protein powder and quality ingredients is less expensive per serving than the convenient RTD beverages. The adventurous will find countless opportunities to mix flavors and vary ingredients to prevent repetition and boredom.
Smoothies are generally iced drinks with a vegetable and/or fruit juice base with protein powder added during the blending process. And protein coffee is our favorite cup of morning Joe powered up with protein powder with flavor and sweeteners added as taste preference requires.
