INTRODUCTION
When athletics and the University of Texas are mentioned in the same breath, it's more than likely the topic is football. Whether it's two older gentleman over coffee at a local diner in the middle of west Texas, or two radio broadcasters on a national sports talk show, football and the University of Texas go together like mashed potatoes and gravy. No doubt about it, in Texas, and specifically the University of Texas - football is, indeed, king.
Since the days of legendary football coach Darrell Royal and his national championship teams, fans of the Burnt Orange have followed football with such enthusiastic interest, a non-follower of the school might think these ardent supporters actually have sons playing in the games. However, in the last 15 years, the enthusiasm that once filled the former Memorial Stadium (now Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium) is guarded at best. Fans aren't sure what to expect one year to the next, and have endured a ride with more ups and downs than the Texas Hill Country.
